Director of Counseling and Psychological Services

Santa Clara University seeks a visionary leader to serve as the Director of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the well-being of our diverse student population.

Key Responsibilities
  • Administration (40%):
    • Provide overall direction, management, and clinical leadership to the Counseling and Psychological Services staff.
    • Monitor the evolving mental health needs of students and develop new services and programs to meet them.
    • Provide clinical expertise and knowledge to those supervised and to the Associate Vice Provost.
    • Serve on the Cowell Center Management Team.
    • Integrate diversity, equity, and inclusion into all levels of CAPS' programmatic and clinical policies and practices.
  • Consultation, Referral, and Outreach Duties (40%):
    • Provide leadership and effective communication for the Center's work with faculty, staff, administrators, parents, and external constituents.
    • Provide consultation and guidance for crisis services, including intervention in emergencies and highly acute situations.
    • Provide referrals as needed to other University departments and community resources.
    • Develop and maintain effective relationships with key campus constituents.
  • Direct Clinical Services (20%):
    • Oversee the coordination of crisis management response for the department.
    • Provide clinical expertise in evaluation, crisis intervention, individual and group therapies, and treatment planning support.
    • Effectively provide short-term therapy and maintain a limited student client caseload.
Qualifications
  • Masters degree required in counseling or clinical psychology from an accredited program in psychology; Doctorate degree (Ph.D., Psy.D., Ed.D.) preferred.
  • A minimum of twelve years of progressive responsible experience, including a minimum of four years of experience as a licensed staff in a university counseling center setting and a minimum of four years managing and supervising staff.
  • Clinically licensed by the State of California for at least two years required.

  • Effective mentoring and coaching skills.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills for engagement across campus constituencies.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, including demonstrated presentation skills.
  • Ability to design and implement exceptional clinical care with appropriately balanced use of available technology platforms.
