Position Overview: The Conservation Strategy Fund (CSF) is excited to announce a vacancy for a Senior Environmental Economist.
About Us: CSF is dedicated to the preservation of biodiversity and the welfare of local communities worldwide. Our mission spans from safeguarding the Amazon rainforest to promoting sustainable fishing practices in Indonesia. For over 25 years, we have empowered individuals with strategic economic tools to tackle environmental issues and promote sustainable development. Our methodologies have been implemented globally, and through our country offices, we provide essential strategic guidance to partners and stakeholders through rigorous economic analysis and comprehensive training. Our capacity-building initiatives have positively impacted over 5,000 individuals from more than 3,000 organizations across 131 nations.
Role of the Senior Environmental Economist: We are in search of a seasoned, bilingual (Spanish and English) environmental economist to enhance our analytical capabilities across the organization. This role is pivotal in maintaining technical excellence and producing high-quality publications. The Senior Environmental Economist will collaborate closely with the Lead Economist, spearheading research design, conducting data analysis, overseeing research teams, and supporting both staff and contracted analysts in their technical endeavors. Additionally, this role will involve contributing to proposal development, instructing in our educational programs, and aiding in the dissemination of our findings. The ideal candidate will be self-driven and adept at collaborating with colleagues on a global scale, making a significant impact within a dynamic international environmental NGO.
Your Contribution: By becoming part of our diverse and international team, you will play a crucial role in ensuring that our global initiatives—from protecting marine life in Indonesia to empowering Indigenous populations in the Amazon—are grounded in consistent technical quality. The CSF team comprises mission-oriented experts from various fields (economics, ecology, engineering, education) working collaboratively to advance conservation efforts in the most vulnerable ecosystems. Your expertise will contribute to an international community dedicated to making a positive difference, allowing you to witness the tangible effects of your work in CSF's strategic efforts to value, finance, and advocate for nature.
Key Responsibilities:
- Research: Engage in research design and conduct high-caliber environmental economics research on diverse topics across various regions.
- Project Management: Lead 1-3 significant studies annually, encompassing research design, analysis, writing, and presenting findings to policymakers and funders.
- Support Projects: Assist in multiple research initiatives managed by others, providing support in analytical approaches, analysis, writing, and additional tasks as necessary.
- Technical Collaboration: Partner with the Lead Economist to establish a technical support unit that enhances research quality and institutional capabilities.
- Communication: Ensure the rigorous and engaging presentation of research findings, including in peer-reviewed journals and CSF publications. Represent the organization at various meetings and events.
- Publications: Oversee the submission of one or more articles annually for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
- Teaching: Actively participate as an engaging instructor in our training programs.
- Proposal Development: Identify new opportunities, assist in proposal and grant application development, and liaise with funders as needed.
- Continuous Learning: Independently explore new analytical themes and methodologies, applying them to CSF research projects while identifying needs and opportunities.
Qualifications:
- Advanced degree in environmental economics or a related discipline.
- 5+ years of experience applying economic principles to environmental and developmental challenges, including direct engagement with policymakers, the private sector, academia, NGOs, and other stakeholders.
- Fluency in both English and Spanish; proficiency in Portuguese is advantageous.
- Extensive international and intercultural experience, with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Technical expertise in two or more analytical areas such as natural capital valuation, cost-benefit analysis, financial mechanisms for nature conservation/restoration, spatial modeling, and economic impact analysis.
- Proven success in writing technical proposals.
- Effective public speaking skills for both academic and non-academic audiences.
- A passion for learning and tackling new analytical challenges.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
Position Details: This is a full-time remote role, with potential for some in-person collaboration depending on the candidate's location. Candidates must possess full, permanent working rights in their intended country of residence.
Application Process: Interested candidates should prepare their application materials, including a CV and a cover letter detailing their relevant experience, fluency in both Spanish and English, and salary expectations. A link to their LinkedIn profile should also be included.
