Key Responsibilities of Residential Substance Abuse Counselors:

  • Preparing and leading group counseling sessions, educational programs, and lectures to assist clients in achieving therapeutic objectives
  • Conducting individual counseling to provide crisis intervention, support, and guidance, addressing client behaviors and personal challenges
  • Documenting clients' progress and responses to treatment
  • Maintaining accurate and up-to-date client records
  • Ensuring the safety and well-being of clients
  • Monitoring client behavior during social, recreational, or daily activities
  • Enforcing house rules and regulations
  • Performing other assigned duties as necessary

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or Master's degree in psychology, counseling, social work, or a related field preferred (High school diploma or equivalent required)
  • A minimum of 6 months of prior experience in substance abuse or mental health counseling is required
  • Relevant work experience with a specific population (adolescent/adult) in a residential treatment setting is necessary

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to walk and navigate the facilities for up to two hours at a time to monitor and engage with clients.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others to exchange information and provide counseling.
  • Ability to accurately record, proofread, and check documents and files regularly.
  • Ability to utilize a keyboard and video display terminal to receive, retrieve, and audit information and data consistently.
  • Ability to respond to telephones and detect alarms and unusual sounds.
  • Ability to operate a vehicle while remaining alert to traffic conditions and complying with traffic signals and signs.
