POSITION SUMMARY:

The Residential Support Specialist is responsible for a diverse range of duties related to the care, support, and rehabilitation of residents. This role involves direct interaction with residents, ensuring that all areas of the facility are maintained to high standards. The Specialist will also assist in food preparation, serving meals, and maintaining a clean and welcoming dining environment. Light to moderate physical activity may be required in routine food service tasks.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Conduct orientation sessions for new residents.
  2. Assist in fulfilling the program needs of residents while fostering the spirit and values of the community.
  3. Communicate effectively with residents regarding program procedures.
  4. Engage in planned interventions with residents, utilizing techniques such as Motivational Interviewing.
  5. Provide social support to residents, offering verbal assistance to encourage independence in daily living.
  6. Facilitate transportation for residents to housing placements, service appointments, recreational activities, or other service-related purposes.
  7. Assist with meal preparation, serving, and clean-up activities.
  8. Prepare and serve meals for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks.
  9. Ensure residents on special diets receive appropriate meals and portions.
  10. Prepare beverages as needed.
  11. Maintain records of meals served.
  12. Clean dining and service areas.
  13. Manage inventory and store supplies as necessary.
  14. Obtain a food handler's license.
  15. Document neighborhood activities and interactions with residents.
  16. Participate in crisis intervention as required.
  17. Engage in management and supervision activities.
  18. Complete required training sessions.
  19. Report serious incidents and complete necessary documentation in accordance with agency policies.
  20. Promote compliance with all relevant laws, regulations, and agency policies to maintain an ethical organizational culture.
  21. Conduct regular rounds of the facility to check on residents.
  22. Arrive at work punctually and as scheduled.
  23. Perform additional job-related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Effective communication skills with staff, residents, and families.
  • Ability to prepare accurate documentation and reports.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Capability to serve as a role model for residents.
  • Respect for cultural differences and ability to work with diverse populations.

  • Sound evaluative judgment.
  • Proficiency in using electronic equipment (computers, printers, etc.).
  • Ability to respond effectively to inquiries from residents.
  • Meeting facilitation skills.
  • Presentation skills for sharing information with residents and staff.
  • Ability to maintain composure in crisis situations.
  • Spanish language proficiency preferred.
  • Consistent attendance and punctuality.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education: High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience: Some experience in a human services environment.

Licenses:

  • Must obtain a food handler's certificate within 45 days of hire.

Valid NYS Driver's license preferred.
