Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Treatment Plant Operator II to join our team at American States Utility Services, Inc. This role is responsible for operating and maintaining water and wastewater treatment systems, ensuring the delivery of safe and clean water to our customers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform routine inspections and monitoring of treatment plant processes, identifying and troubleshooting any issues that may arise.
  • Operate and adjust treatment plant equipment, including pumps, motors, and feeders, to maintain optimal plant operations.
  • Collect and document liquid and solid samples, performing routine water quality laboratory tests and working closely with the laboratory on testing processes.
  • Perform general plant facility maintenance, including cleaning, painting, and repairing plant facilities, as well as grounds maintenance duties as required.
  • Operate heavy equipment, including backhoes, loaders, scrapers, forklifts, dump trucks, and tractor trailer combinations, assisting in unloading chemicals as necessary.
  • Comply with all OSHA and ASUS safety standards and practices, ensuring a safe working environment for all employees.
  • Coordinate construction, maintenance, material selection, and repair activities with maintenance, laboratory, contractors, vendors, and other staff.
  • Participate in special projects, such as construction of piping, electrical, and structural systems related to assigned work area.
  • Develop and implement goals and procedures for water or wastewater treatment activities, gathering and analyzing data, and developing reports.
  • Work with vendors, outside contractors, and the general public on water or wastewater activities, answering questions and resolving conflicts.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Driver's License issued by the state where employed.
  • Must take and pass Federal OSHA, US Army Corps of Engineers, and/or State Mandated Safety training, with annual refresher courses, as required by the associated regulations for this position.
  • Must possess Water or Wastewater Treatment Licenses required for operation of the systems or have the ability to obtain such certification within 6 months.
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, including standing for extended periods, lifting heavy loads, kneeling, crawling, and climbing.
  • Ability to understand basic math and chemistry and apply knowledge to water/wastewater treatment process.
  • Must possess knowledge and comprehension of safety practices for general construction and handling of all materials used in water and wastewater system operations.
  • Ascertains general knowledge of water system operations, control settings, and plant operations.
  • Communication skills, including demonstrated fluency with reading, writing, and speaking the English language.
  • Use and operate self-contained breathing apparatus and/or respiratory equipment.
  • Two (2) years as a Treatment Plant Operator I or two (2) years of water or wastewater treatment experience.
  • Intermediate math skills.
  • Knowledge of hydraulics, chemistry, and biology.
  • Knowledge of basic plumbing skills.
  • Recognize unusual, inefficient, or dangerous operating conditions.
  • Principles and practices of water or wastewater treatment plant operations.
  • Operating principles of plant equipment, such as valves, pumps, and motors.
  • Methods and techniques of maintaining, repairing, and troubleshooting water or wastewater plant equipment and processes.
  • Pertinent federal, state, and local laws and regulations pertaining to water or wastewater treatment.
Physical Requirements
  • Working in confined space.
  • Working in areas exposed to noise and chemicals, requiring the use of appropriate PPE.
  • Working in extreme weather conditions.
  • Lifting and carrying loads up to 50 lbs.
  • Performing work up to limits of elevated water storage tanks.
  • Standing, sitting, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, reaching, handling, grasping, fine dexterity, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, bending, twisting, climbing, balancing, vision including color determination, hearing, foot & hand controls.
