Summary
THIS IS A NATIONAL GUARD TITLE 32 EXCEPTED SERVICE POSITION.

This National Guard position is for a GROUND SUPPORT EQUIPMENT TECHNICIAN (TITLE 32), Position Description Number D and is part of the IL AASF 2, National Guard.

Responsibilities
As a GROUND SUPPORT EQUIPMENT TECHNICIAN (TITLE 32), WG-5378-5/8/10, you will be responsible for the upkeep and repair of power ground and other auxiliary equipment utilized in aircraft servicing and repairs.

Major Duties
  • This is NOT an all-inclusive list: Ensure equipment is maintained in a clean state, free from dirt, oil, grease, and corrosion.

Regularly monitor equipment operations to identify issues. Maintain detailed records and equipment logbooks.

Oversee the Ground Support Equipment maintenance program, manage inventory, and schedule preventative maintenance for ground support apparatus.

Diagnose, repair, service, modify, and operate powered ground support equipment such as AC and DC power generators, air compressors, blowers, heaters, portable lighting units, deicers, and non-powered equipment including work stands, jacks, ramps, tow-bars, etc.

Conduct necessary preventative maintenance and servicing of equipment, which includes tire repairs and replacements, lubrication, oil changes, and the replacement of air, fuel, and oil filters, along with checking fluid levels and adjusting or replacing ignition components, hoses, v-belts, and other items.

Perform comprehensive system component overhauls, repairs, and troubleshooting as required, covering power-plant systems, brake systems, steering systems, hydraulic systems, diesel and gas systems, air systems, starting systems, ignition systems, and electrical systems.

Identify and rectify deficiencies in flight-critical equipment, including lifting devices, turbine-powered generators, towing devices, and auxiliary power units. Assess equipment to determine the extent of repairs needed and the parts required.

Execute maintenance tasks, including troubleshooting, tune-ups, and adjustments of internal combustion and turbine engines, fuel controls, carburetors, clutch linkages, brakes, and other mechanical components using standard hand tools and various testing equipment.

Requirements

This is an excepted service position that necessitates membership in the Illinois National Guard and in the military grade specified in the announcement.

Selectee will be required to wear the military uniform. Acceptance of an excepted service position constitutes concurrence with these requirements as a condition of employment. Males born after 31 December 1959 must be registered for Selective Service. Federal employment suitability is determined by a background investigation. A probationary period may be required.

This position is governed by the Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment (30 Sep 96) of the Gun Control Act (Lautenberg Amendment) of 1968. An individual convicted of a qualifying crime of domestic violence may not perform the duties of this position.

Irregular and/or overtime hours may be necessary to support operational requirements or contingencies, which may include working hours outside of the standard duty day.

Participation in direct deposit is mandatory. Recruitment and relocation incentives may be available for this position. PCS expenses may be authorized.

Qualifications

AREA OF CONSIDERATION:
The areas of consideration for this position, Title 32 Excepted Service (32 U.S. Code 709), will be in the following manner and sequence:

The FIRST area of consideration will be all excepted permanent and indefinite temporary technicians within the ILNG.

The SECOND area of consideration will be all current Federal Employees. The THIRD area of consideration will be all Federal re-employment eligible. The FOURTH area of consideration will be applicants willing to become T32 Dual Status Technicians and gain ILNG membership. The FIFTH area of consideration will be U.S. Citizens.

Military Grades:
Enlisted Only - May not exceed the rank of SSG

GENERAL EXPERIENCE:
MUST possess experience or training that demonstrates knowledge of mechanical maintenance work; ability to read and utilize technical manuals, illustrations, diagrams, and schematics, and skill in using equipment and hand tools for troubleshooting, testing, and repairing equipment.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:
WG-10 Level

  • MUST possess specialized experience which includes experience or training in removing, adjusting, replacing, cleaning, and installing parts, components, and accessories; experience providing working knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic theory as it applies to powered support equipment and systems; skill to replace, fit, install, and make adjustments; experience providing working knowledge of the makeup and operation of the various individual systems maintained and their interrelationships; and experience reading and interpreting parts lists, manufacturers' repair manuals, diagrams, and electrical schematics.
WG-08 Level
  • MUST possess specialized experience which includes experience or training that demonstrates a basic understanding of electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic theory and the makeup and operation of the various individual systems and their interrelationships; experience using a small variety of test and measurement devices; experience removing, adjusting, replacing, cleaning, and installing a variety of parts, components, and accessories; and experience reading and interpreting technical manuals, blueprints, diagrams, and schematics.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
