Summary:

The Surgical Support Assistant is responsible for facilitating patient transport to the operating room in a safe, organized, and efficient manner. This role involves maintaining sanitation in the operating room and perioperative areas. Under supervision and established protocols, the Surgical Support Assistant aids in the seamless operation of the Anesthesia Department by managing and supplying necessary equipment and materials.

Experience/Education Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of mandatory inservices upon hire and annually.
  • 2-4 weeks of basic orientation within the operating room department, followed by hands-on training with preceptors.
  • On-the-job training.
License or Certification Requirements:
  • Current CPR certification or completion within six months of hiring is preferred.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Order and manage cafeteria supplies.
  • Respond promptly to communications and report efficiently to the desk facilitator.
  • Assist operating room staff with patient lifting, positioning, and transfers.
  • Manage the acquisition and proper storage of cleaning supplies.
  • Ensure cleanliness of equipment and manage supply orders.
  • Participate in unit meetings and daily briefings.
  • Check operating room suites for adequate supplies and equipment, restocking as necessary.
  • Remove excess equipment post-procedure and at the end of the day.
  • Clean anesthesia equipment between cases and at the end of the day.
  • Maintain cleanliness of scrub sinks and restock supplies as needed.
  • Manage waste disposal and contact environmental services for excess waste removal.
  • Restock necessary cleaning solutions and supplies in the cleaning room.
  • Maintain inventory of anesthesia supplies and equipment.
  • Ensure clear pathways in hallways for emergency access.
  • Keep lounges for staff organized and clean throughout the day.
  • Report pertinent patient information to the charge nurse or operating room manager.
  • Utilize the "CUS" acronym to communicate patient safety concerns effectively.
  • Prepare operating rooms based on scheduled cases, including emergency procedures.
  • Regularly clean anesthesia work areas and equipment.
  • Manage the replacement of sharp containers and coordinate with environmental services for pickups.
  • Restock scrub supplies and maintain cleanliness of the work environment.
  • Transport specimens to the lab in a timely manner, ensuring proper labeling.
  • Understand and implement isolation protocols as necessary.
  • Collaborate with the entire operating room team to ensure safe patient care.
  • Embrace constructive feedback for professional development.
  • Adhere to policies and stay updated on procedural changes.
  • Participate in discussions aimed at process improvement.
  • Support a culture of teamwork and collaboration.
  • Prepare for nightly tasks and manage departmental outdates.
  • Understand that the role encompasses a range of responsibilities beyond the job description.
