Landscape Care Specialist

The Proprietors of the Cemetery of Mount Auburn manage a historic landscape that spans 175 acres, located in the vicinity of Boston, Massachusetts. Established in the early 19th century, this site attracts over 200,000 visitors annually and is recognized as a National Historic Landmark. It serves as a serene resting place, offering solace to the bereaved while celebrating the lives of those interred within its beautifully curated grounds. As an accredited arboretum, the Cemetery boasts a diverse collection of 5,000 trees and over 20,000 plants.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Landscape Care Specialist is accountable for the upkeep and horticultural initiatives at the Cemetery, under the guidance of the Director of Ornamental Horticulture. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, weeding, mulching, watering, pruning, preparing planting beds, planting, edging, fertilizing, debris removal, snow management, and maintaining accurate records. This role also involves supervising seasonal staff and volunteers as needed.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead and direct seasonal gardeners and volunteers to achieve horticultural objectives effectively.
- Execute planting and maintenance of designated plant beds and containers, utilizing a variety of plant materials including groundcovers, trees, shrubs, and perennials.
- Maintain comprehensive plant records in alignment with organizational practices.
- Collaborate with the Arboriculture Team and fellow Horticulturists as required.
- Identify plant pest issues, propose treatment solutions, and implement plant health care strategies while keeping detailed records.
- In conjunction with the Horticultural Curator and Director of Ornamental Horticulture, research and implement horticultural enhancements.
- Participate in snow removal operations as necessary.
- Perform additional tasks as directed by the Director of Ornamental Horticulture to support other departments or enhance the Cemetery's landscape.
- Operate all vehicles and equipment in a safe and responsible manner.
- Adhere to all safety protocols and procedures related to assigned duties, including the use of personal protective equipment and safe handling of chemicals.
- Demonstrate punctuality and manage time effectively using the mobile time clock system.
- Represent the Cemetery with professionalism in demeanor, attire, and communication.
Demonstrate a commitment to environmental stewardship in all aspects of the role.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- A degree in Ornamental Horticulture or a related field, or equivalent experience is required.
- A minimum of five years of relevant horticultural experience.
- A valid driver's license is necessary.
- Proven ability to effectively lead teams and manage work crews.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently.
- Experience in high-end residential landscaping or public horticulture is preferred.
- Knowledge of local flora, including native species and commonly used ornamental plants.
- Willingness to obtain a Pesticide Applicator License (Core) and a Massachusetts Hoisting License 2A within one year of hire.
- Professional certifications such as MCA, MCH, or ISA are advantageous but not mandatory.
- Effective communication skills with staff, vendors, and visitors are essential.
- Basic computer proficiency in programs such as Microsoft Office is required.
- Bilingual skills in Spanish are a plus, with fluency in English required.
- Ability to perform heavy work, including lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Competence in using various hand tools and power equipment.
- Capability to work in diverse positions and environments, including outdoor settings in varying weather conditions.
