About the Executive Department:

The Office of Sustainability operates within the Executive Department of the City of Cambridge, under the guidance of the City Manager. This office collaborates with the City Council and various departments to enhance the sustainability efforts for the community.

About the Role:

The Chief Climate Officer will have a direct reporting line to the City Manager. This pivotal role involves spearheading the Office of Sustainability's climate initiatives across all City departments. Key responsibilities include formulating and managing a holistic decarbonization and resilience strategy, engaging with stakeholders, and advising on programs and policies.

Key Responsibilities:Climate Strategy and Leadership:
  • Formulate short, medium, and long-term strategies to meet climate objectives
  • Oversee the execution of essential climate programs
  • Lead collaborations with various stakeholders
  • Facilitate access to funding sources
  • Advise on sustainability and resilience policies and guidelines
Climate Operations:
  • Execute and prioritize the Climate Action Plan
  • Supervise data collection and reporting processes
  • Manage the operational budget of the department
  • Prepare and present reports to different committees
Team Development and Management:
  • Build and enhance the climate team
  • Oversee staff and provide guidance
  • Foster a high-performance culture within the department
  • Recruit and manage external consultants
Minimum Qualifications:

Demonstrated experience in climate/sustainability and management roles, project management capabilities, strong relationship-building skills, and familiarity with regulatory frameworks.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Understanding of the City of Cambridge
  • LEED accreditation
  • Advanced degree in environmental science or related field
  • Experience in establishing new departments or teams
