About the Department:

The Community Development Department (CDD) functions as the planning authority for the City of Cambridge. The primary mission of CDD is to foster a sustainable, equitable, and just community through various divisions that emphasize community planning, economic growth, transportation strategies, and zoning regulations.

About the Role:

The Community Planning Division is integral to improving the living standards in Cambridge by providing planning and design services for citywide and neighborhood development initiatives. This internship offers a distinctive opportunity for individuals passionate about planning and community development to collaborate closely with the planning office personnel.

Responsibilities of the Community Planning Intern:

  • Assisting in the processes of neighborhood action planning, community engagement, and outreach initiatives
  • Helping to develop and assess community engagement tools and organizing outreach events
  • Coordinating meetings with stakeholders, managing communications, and performing administrative duties
  • Creating and disseminating outreach materials through various channels
  • Engaging in additional projects aligned with personal skills and departmental needs

Minimum Requirements:

Education & Experience:

  • Currently enrolled in a degree program in urban planning or a related discipline

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Exceptional organizational and time management capabilities
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and standard office software
  • Highly driven and detail-oriented
  • Ability to collaborate with diverse groups and communities
  • Familiarity with sustainable design principles and the City of Cambridge
  • Interest in community engagement, social equity, and racial justice
  • Proficiency in languages prevalent in Cambridge is advantageous
  • Experience in social services or community outreach is beneficial
  • Strong writing, research, and data analysis skills
  • Familiarity with relevant software tools is preferred
