GENERAL DESCRIPTION:


This is a professional role dedicated to maintaining essential firefighting capabilities and paramedic licensure. Responsibilities include executing both basic and advanced life support techniques, fire prevention, extinguishing fires, safeguarding lives and property, and enforcing relevant fire prevention regulations.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:


The following duties outline the primary responsibilities of this position, though they do not encompass every possible task:

  • Responds to emergency calls, executing fire, EMS, and rescue operations as required.
  • Conducts rescues and assists individuals in peril.
  • Operates various firefighting and EMS equipment to provide advanced life support and extinguish fires.
  • Facilitates ventilation in burning structures to remove smoke, heat, and harmful gases.
  • Engages in salvage and overhaul activities at fire incidents.
  • Maintains cleanliness and functionality of department facilities and equipment.
  • Participates in prevention and educational initiatives, including fire hydrant upkeep.
  • Conducts annual inspections and testing of fire hoses.
  • Attends training sessions relevant to EMS, firefighting, equipment operation, and emergency medical care.
  • Promotes public education initiatives as directed.
  • Performs pre-fire planning through site visits.
  • Administers Basic and Advanced Life Support in accordance with established protocols.
  • Provides emergency medical services and advanced life support within training parameters.
  • Occasionally serves as an EMT on a BLS unit as directed.
  • Acts as an ambulance driver when necessary.
  • Handles patient transfers, both within and outside the county.
  • Completes necessary documentation, including patient reports and daily logs, accurately and promptly.
  • Maintains cleanliness and inventory of ambulance supplies and equipment.
  • Ensures a professional and safe working environment, adhering to safety policies.
  • Follows organizational policies and procedures consistently.
  • Adapts to changes and performs additional tasks as assigned.
  • Collaborates effectively with all personnel across the organization.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Proficient in firefighting techniques, policies, and procedures.
  • Skilled in advanced life support emergency medical practices.
  • Familiarity with local geography and building types within the assigned area.
  • Understanding of various fire hazards in the designated district.
  • Commitment to continuous learning in firefighting and emergency medical care.
  • Ability to comprehend and execute oral and written instructions.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Competence in safely operating fire service vehicles under emergency conditions.
  • Expertise in the use and maintenance of firefighting and medical equipment.
  • Knowledge of CPR and advanced life support techniques.
  • Awareness of safety measures in patient handling and treatment.
  • Familiarity with local roadway systems.
  • Understanding of Florida safety regulations during emergency responses.
  • Knowledge of Florida traffic laws.
  • Ability to maintain positive working relationships with colleagues and the public.

PHYSICAL SKILLS:


This position requires the ability to exert over 100 pounds of force occasionally. Regular activities include speaking, hearing, sitting, and repetitive motions, with occasional standing, walking, and lifting. Close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus are necessary. Effective communication and detailed visual inspections are also required. Candidates must meet physical and medical standards for firefighting and hazardous materials as per N.F.P.A. guidelines.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or equivalent required.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS:
Valid Florida driver's license required. Florida Firefighter II Certificate of compliance necessary.

Current Florida Paramedic certification, AHA/Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), 16-hour Emergency Vehicle Operation (EVOC or CEVO), and Current CPR/AED for Health Care Provider (BLS) certifications are mandatory.

Approval by the E.M.S. Medical Director is required to practice as a Paramedic.

OTHER JOB-RELATED REQUIREMENTS:
Disaster Essential. Paid firefighters in Highlands County are not permitted to serve as volunteer firefighters in the same area. This does not prevent them from holding administrative roles in any Highlands County VFD. ACJIS background check is required.
