GENERAL
DESCRIPTION:


This role encompasses a professional commitment to maintaining essential firefighting competencies and paramedic credentials. Responsibilities include executing both basic and advanced life support techniques, fire prevention, and extinguishment, as well as safeguarding lives and property. The position also involves enforcing relevant fire prevention regulations at both County and State levels.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:


The following statements outline the primary responsibilities of the position, although they do not encompass every task that may be assigned.

Additional duties may be performed as necessary.

  • Responds to emergency calls alongside a fire company, executing assigned fire, EMS, and rescue operations.
  • Conducts rescues and ensures the safe removal of individuals from hazardous situations.
  • Operates various fire and EMS vehicles and equipment to provide advanced life support and extinguish fires.
  • Facilitates ventilation of burning structures to eliminate smoke, heat, and gases as instructed.
  • Engages in salvage and overhaul efforts at fire incidents as directed.
  • Performs maintenance and cleaning tasks on departmental facilities and equipment.
  • Participates in prevention and educational initiatives as directed, including fire hydrant upkeep when necessary.
  • Conducts annual inspections and testing of fire hoses.
  • Attends training sessions relevant to EMS, firefighting, fire inspections, equipment handling, emergency medical care, and related fields.
  • Promotes and leads public education initiatives as assigned.
  • Conducts periodic site visits for pre-fire planning purposes.
  • Provides Basic and Advanced Life Support care in accordance with established protocols and guidelines.
  • Administers emergency medical services and advanced life support within the scope of training.
  • Occasionally serves as an EMT on a BLS unit as directed by a supervising officer.
  • Acts as an ambulance driver when required.
  • Handles both emergency and non-emergency patient transfers as assigned.
  • Completes necessary documentation, including patient reports and daily logs, accurately and promptly.
  • Maintains cleanliness and organization of the ambulance and equipment, ensuring inventory is up to date.
  • Upholds a professional and safe work environment, adhering to established safety protocols.
  • Consistently complies with organizational policies and procedures.
  • Adapts positively to changes and performs additional tasks as directed.
  • Collaborates effectively with all personnel across the command structure.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

PHYSICAL SKILLS:


This position requires occasional exertion of over 100 pounds of force; regular communication is necessary, along with frequent sitting and repetitive motions. Occasional standing, walking, and physical activities such as climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, and lifting are also required. Vision capabilities must include close and distance vision, depth perception, and peripheral vision. Vocal communication is essential for conveying instructions and information. Hearing is necessary for understanding spoken communications and distinguishing sounds. The role involves preparing and analyzing written data, operating machinery, and observing surroundings. Candidates must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs and meet physical and medical standards as outlined by relevant safety regulations.



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or equivalent required.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS,

OR REGISTRATIONS:


Must possess a valid Florida driver’s license. Florida Firefighter II Certificate of compliance is mandatory.

Must maintain current Florida Paramedic certification, AHA/Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), 16-hour Emergency Vehicle Operation (EVOC or CEVO), and Current CPR/AED for Health Care Provider (BLS).

Approval by the E.M.S. Medical Director is required to practice as a Paramedic.

OTHER JOB-RELATED REQUIREMENTS:
Disaster Essential. Paid firefighters in Highlands County are not permitted to serve as volunteer firefighters within the same jurisdiction. This does not exclude them from holding administrative roles within any Highlands County Volunteer Fire Department. Background checks will include ACJIS as part of the hiring process.
