POSITION: Doula
SUPERVISOR: Director of Prevention Services
FLSA: Part-Time
This role is crucial in delivering continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to families engaged in our services during the perinatal period. The Doula collaborates with parent educators to implement educational programs and serves as a client advocate, offering guidance and encouragement throughout the childbirth experience.
Key Responsibilities:
Client Education:
- Provide comprehensive education on the physiological and emotional aspects of childbirth, breastfeeding, and early infant care.
- Empower clients by teaching coping strategies and comfort techniques for labor and delivery.
- Facilitate informed discussions regarding birth options and potential interventions.
- Organize monthly group sessions to provide prenatal and postpartum education and connect families with community resources.
Prenatal Support:
- Establish a supportive relationship with clients during pregnancy, discussing preferences and creating personalized birth plans.
- Deliver evidence-based information to assist clients in making informed choices regarding their care.
- Offer emotional reassurance to alleviate concerns related to childbirth.
Labor and Birth Support:
- Provide continuous emotional and physical support during labor, whether at home, in a birth center, or hospital.
- Utilize comfort measures such as massage and breathing techniques to enhance relaxation and pain management.
- Advocate for clients' preferences and facilitate communication with healthcare providers.
Postpartum Support:
- Assist with breastfeeding initiation and support bonding between newborns and parents.
- Provide emotional support to parents as they adjust to the postpartum period, addressing challenges such as feeding and sleep.
- Offer practical assistance with newborn care and connect families to community resources.
Documentation and Communication:
- Maintain accurate records of client interactions and service delivery for reporting purposes.
- Ensure effective communication with healthcare providers to coordinate care for clients.
- Participate in supervision sessions to maintain program compliance and receive performance feedback.
Qualifications:
- Certification as a doula from a recognized organization.
- Completion of relevant training workshops covering childbirth education and postpartum care.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to connect with clients from diverse backgrounds.
- Compassionate and non-judgmental approach to supporting clients' choices.
- Knowledge of evidence-based practices in maternity care.
Requirements:
- Ability to provide services in both office and community settings.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
- Availability for on-call support during clients' labor and childbirth.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
