Job Summary

The Muhlenberg College Department of Art is seeking a highly skilled and organized individual to fill the role of Studio Technician and Administrative Assistant. This is a full-time, year-round position located on campus in Allentown, PA, with an anticipated schedule of 35 hours per week during the academic year and 21 hours per week during the summer.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide technical support for the painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture areas, ensuring compliance with shop safety regulations and guidelines.
  • Order and replenish standard supplies in all studio areas, maintaining records and inventory.
  • Address regular equipment maintenance in the photography, printmaking, sculpture, and painting areas, including routine checking and repair of equipment deficiencies.
  • Supervise student workers for assistance with upkeep in and monitoring of the studios and equipment checkout.
  • Maintain order in the painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture studios, including the computer lab/photo studio, darkroom, printmaking studio, woodshop, metal shop, ceramics studio, and painting studio.
  • Supervise equipment cage checkout and maintenance (photography and sculpture).
  • Research equipment, materials, and technology in collaboration with faculty to support up-to-date practices.
Administrative Responsibilities
  • Provide professional and welcoming reception to visitors, students, parents, faculty, and staff, through in-person, email, phone, and other communications.
  • Respond to departmental inquiries, questions, and communications from students, campus visitors, and other campus colleagues.
  • Prepare Workday purchase orders and manage reconciliation of studio supplies and equipment.
  • Complete monthly reconciliation of department credit card expenses, used to order additional studio supplies and equipment.
  • Order and maintain inventory of office supplies.
  • Submit check requests for models and honoraria for guest artists.
  • Maintain a list of models and their availability; coordinate faculty requests to schedule models for classes.
  • Submit work orders to Plant Operations for classroom repairs, key requests, etc.
  • Schedule department tours with prospective students.
  • Distribute prospective student portfolios for Art Talent Awards.
  • With the Department Chair, review degree audit for graduating studio art and art history majors and minors.
Requirements
  • High school graduate or equivalent required.
  • BA, BFA, or Associate's degree in studio art preferred, but not required. Equivalent related professional experience will also be considered.
  • Minimum two years of relevant experience working in painting, photography, printmaking, and/or sculpture studios preferred.
  • Experience providing administrative support in a professional setting.
  • Demonstrated capacity to manage and operate studio classroom facilities.
  • Knowledge about current and upcoming trends in digital technologies is a plus.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, interpersonal and administrative skills, problem analysis and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills with the ability to multitask, meet deadlines, and manage/prioritize administrative and studio responsibilities.
  • Ability to effectively collaborate with faculty, staff, and students to support a safe and positive studio culture.
  • Ability to track and manage studio financials.
  • Active commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging.
  • Ability to work independently with attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated computer proficiency, including MS Office and Google Workspace.
  • Successful completion of satisfactory background checks required.
