Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Phlebotomist III to join our team at the University of Maryland Medical System. As a key member of our laboratory team, you will be responsible for collecting blood samples from patients, ensuring the quality of specimens, and maintaining the safety and comfort of patients.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Collect venous and capillary blood specimens according to established procedures and protocols.
  2. Utilize a computerized system for logging and tracking specimen collection and patient information.
  3. Operate simple medical laboratory equipment, such as centrifuges and microscopes, to process and analyze blood samples.
  4. Effectively communicate with laboratory and medical staff to resolve problems and concerns regarding specimens and to properly identify and label specimens for processing, delivery, and storage.
  5. Respond to requests for STAT phlebotomy, when indicated, and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines.
  6. Ability to stand for prolonged periods of time and walk periodically in the process of performing phlebotomy work.
  7. May receive and process specimens for testing in various laboratory departments according to established procedures.
  8. Operate centrifuge and separate specimens according to departmental procedure, and properly store specimens when necessary.
  9. Enter patient demographic data into the laboratory computer system, access appropriate accounts, and recognize when there is a need for a new medical record.
  10. Respond to telephone inquiries for test results, specimen status, or other general inquiries.
  11. Monitor pending phlebotomy orders and ensure collections are completed.
  12. Assist in the training of new personnel by following training checklists, completing competency checklists, and ensuring personnel is competent to perform duties before assigning a shift.
  13. Competently perform donor blood collections, if applicable at the facility.
  14. May assess patients for an appropriate IV site and initiate peripheral intravenous lines using jelcos, butterflies, needles, etc., as directed through physician orders.
Qualifications

We require a High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) and completion of an accredited program in phlebotomy. Certification as a registered phlebotomist by a nationally recognized Phlebotomy Society is preferred. A minimum of three years of work experience as a phlebotomist is preferred, with experience in a healthcare environment and laboratory specimen processing experience being advantageous.
