Key Attributes: The ideal candidate will work collaboratively with both adults and children, follow instructions diligently, and maintain confidentiality regarding student and family information. Strong communication skills and a commitment to fostering a safe and supportive environment for children are crucial. Regular attendance and punctuality are expected. While prior experience with children is advantageous, it is not mandatory. Basic clerical skills may also be beneficial. Employment is contingent upon successfully passing a physical abilities assessment.


Physical Requirements: The role demands the ability to see, hear, and respond swiftly to ensure the safety and instructional needs of students. Candidates must be capable of clear articulation and be physically active throughout the school day, which includes standing for extended periods, bending, lifting light objects, and possessing good manual dexterity. Emotional resilience is necessary for managing student behavior, and candidates should be prepared for exposure to typical environmental conditions found in educational settings. The role may involve assisting students with personal needs, including toileting.


Core Responsibilities: The Educational Assistant and Mid-Day Assistant will support various specific tasks that enhance the effectiveness of the special education program. Responsibilities include:

  1. Assisting in the preparation and upkeep of instructional materials tailored for students with visual impairments.
  2. Providing direct instructional support as directed by the vision specialist, including reading, tutoring, and implementing lesson plans.
  3. Maintaining accurate records of student progress.
  4. Helping students with personal care needs, including feeding, dressing, and using specialized equipment.
  5. Performing light clerical duties such as typing, filing, and data entry.
  6. Operating audio-visual equipment for educational purposes.
  7. Grading assignments and monitoring student activities in various settings.
  8. Preparing educational displays and assisting in administrative tasks.
  9. Facilitating meal times and ensuring students receive necessary physical support.
  10. Maintaining discipline and safety during activities.
  11. Transporting students to various locations within the school.

Reporting Structure: This position reports directly to the School Principal.

Employment Terms: Full-time Educational Assistants work on the same schedule as teachers, with salary and benefits determined by the Board. Part-time Mid-Day Assistants are limited to a maximum of 4 hours per day, working only on school days, without benefits, and compensated at an hourly rate set by the Board.
