Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Maintenance Power Plant Operator to join our team at UMass Med School. The successful candidate will be responsible for the maintenance and repair of all power plant equipment, including boilers, turbine generators, air compressors, refrigeration equipment, pumps, motors, and other related equipment auxiliaries.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform routine maintenance and repairs on power plant equipment, including boilers, turbine generators, and air compressors.
  • Operate and maintain high-pressure steam boilers with superheaters, economizers, and auxiliary equipment.
  • Operate and maintain steam turbine generators, condensers, condensing water pumps, and other related auxiliaries.
  • Monitor and adjust power demand and consumption to ensure optimal power factor correction, frequency, and voltage.
  • Operate and maintain electrical power systems, including the Uninterrupted Power System (UPS), normal 13,800 volts power distribution system, and Emergency Power System from the standby diesel generator.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, cleaning, and repair of all power plant equipment and instrumentation.
  • Take readings on all Power Plant Equipment and perform other duties as required.
Requirements
  • Must hold a Massachusetts Third Class or higher grade Stationary Engineer's License.
  • 1-2 years' experience in modern power plant operations.
  • Possess thorough knowledge of and ability to maintain and repair all power plant related equipment with minimum supervision.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts.
  • Possess some welding and machine shop experience.
  • Possess the theory and application of good safety practices around high pressure, high voltage systems, and rotating equipment.
  • Possess the theory, application, and experience in the operation of maintenance of refrigeration and condensing steam turbine-driven centrifugals compressors, evaporators, condensers, and related equipment.
  • Possess the theory, application, and experience in the operation of large condensing, extracting steam turbo-electric generating equipment and related auxiliaries.
  • Possess the theory, application, and experience of large high pressure boilers equipped with super heaters, economizers, dual fuel systems, pneumatic combustion controls, and flame scanners.
