Waste Collection Operator

The Residential Waste Transport Specialist is tasked with the safe, efficient, and courteous provision of waste management services to clients. This role involves the collection of solid waste or recyclables from designated routes and their transportation to processing facilities.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Operate a residential waste collection vehicle, including side-load and rear-load trucks, along with ancillary equipment to collect solid waste and recyclables.
  • Load solid waste, yard waste, and recyclables into the designated collection vehicle.
  • Utilize equipment on the truck to compact waste effectively.
  • Employ prescribed techniques to operate the vehicle and equipment, minimizing mechanical failures.
  • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip safety inspections and maintain necessary documentation as required by management.
  • Report mechanical issues to the maintenance team and supervisors promptly.
  • Ensure adherence to route quality standards set by management.
  • Follow all safety protocols and regulations related to vehicle operation and waste collection.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the vehicle, including both the interior and exterior.
  • Identify and manage prohibited waste items appropriately.
  • Oversee assigned helpers as necessary.
  • Comply with all applicable laws, regulations, and company policies.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment at all times.
  • Report any accidents or incidents to supervisors immediately.
  • Maintain a professional demeanor while interacting with customers and the public.
  • Keep accurate records of services rendered.
  • Manage inventory of containers and recommend additional purchases as needed.
  • Collaborate with supervisors to enhance routing efficiencies.
  • Be available for overtime as required.
  • Participate in safety and branch meetings.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by management.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Possession of a Commercial Driver's License is mandatory.
  • A minimum of one year of commercial driving experience or a CDL school certificate is required.
  • Must meet safety-sensitive function criteria as per company standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to safely operate the truck and equipment is essential.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Understanding of truck components and basic maintenance requirements for safe operation.
  • Ability to maneuver the truck in tight spaces and utilize mirrors for backing.
  • Capability to identify unacceptable waste materials.
  • Effective communication skills with both internal and external customers.
  • Proficiency in reading, writing, and comprehending relevant documents and maps.
  • Ability to follow both oral and written instructions.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changes and a commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Physical capability to lift and carry objects up to 50 pounds using proper techniques.
  • Coordination to operate multiple limbs while performing tasks.
  • Adherence to all company safety policies and procedures.

Physical/Mental Demands:

  • Ability to perform various physical activities, including standing, walking, and lifting.

Visual Requirements:

Includes close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus, particularly when maneuvering in high-traffic areas.


  • Regularly lift/move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift/move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift/move up to 100 pounds.
  • Driving may require sitting for extended periods.
  • Ability to work in typically loud environments.

Working Conditions:

  • Exposure to loud noise, varying weather conditions, and potential hazards associated with waste collection.
  • Work primarily outdoors, away from the branch location.
  • Constantly navigate through motor vehicle traffic.
  • Occasional work in elevated or precarious positions.
