The Residential Waste Transport Specialist is tasked with the safe, efficient, and courteous delivery of waste collection services to clients. This role involves the collection of solid waste or recyclables from designated curbside and/or backdoor routes and their transportation to post-collection facilities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operate a residential or recycling collection vehicle, including side-load and/or rear-load trucks, along with ancillary equipment and hydraulic systems to gather solid waste and/or recyclables on assigned routes.
- Load solid waste, yard waste, and/or recyclables into the collection vehicle.
- Utilize equipment on the truck to compact waste effectively.
- Drive the vehicle and operate equipment following prescribed techniques to minimize mechanical failures.
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip safety inspections and complete necessary reports, including daily truck logs and route sheets as requested by management.
- Report any mechanical issues with the vehicle to the mechanic and supervisor promptly.
- Adhere to route quality standards as established by management.
- Follow all safety protocols and perform equipment checks in accordance with federal, state, local, and company regulations.
- Maintain cleanliness of the vehicle by regularly cleaning both the interior and exterior.
- Identify and tag prohibited waste items, ensuring their removal from waste containers.
- Oversee assigned helpers, if applicable.
- Comply with all relevant laws, regulations, and company policies as directed by supervisors.
- Wear all required personal protective equipment at all times.
- Immediately report any accidents or incidents to supervisors.
- Exhibit professionalism in demeanor and appearance while interacting with customers and the public.
- Keep accurate records of services rendered.
- Maintain an inventory of containers and carts, recommending purchases as necessary.
- Collaborate with supervisors to enhance routing efficiencies.
- May be required to work overtime as needed.
- Participate in safety and branch meetings.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by management.
Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Possession of a Commercial Driver's License is required.
- A minimum of one year of commercial driving experience or a CDL school certificate is necessary.
- Must meet safety-sensitive function criteria according to company standards.
- Demonstrated ability to safely operate the truck and equipment is essential.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Understanding of truck components and basic maintenance requirements for safe operation.
- Ability to maneuver the truck in tight spaces and back distances of approximately 120 feet or more.
- Capability to identify unacceptable waste materials.
- Effective communication skills with both internal and external customers.
- Ability to read, write, and comprehend relevant documents and maps.
- Understanding and following oral and written instructions.
- Flexibility to adapt to changes and a commitment to continuous improvement.
- Physical capability to lift, push, pull, or carry objects up to 50 pounds using proper techniques.
- Coordination of limbs while sitting or standing is required.
- Adherence to all company safety policies and procedures.
Physical/Mental Demands:
- Ability to stand, walk, use hands and fingers, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, hear, climb, balance, and smell.
Visual Requirements:
Includes close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus due to constant vehicle maneuvering in high-traffic areas.
- Regularly lift/move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift/move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift/move up to 100 pounds.
- Sitting may be required for up to 75% of the time due to the primary function of driving.
- Ability to work in typically loud conditions.
Working Conditions:
- Frequent exposure to loud noise, humidity, rain, extreme temperatures, moving mechanical parts, vibrations, toxic chemicals, fumes, and airborne particles.
- Work primarily in an outdoor environment.
- Consistently work away from the branch location throughout the day.
- Occasional work in high or precarious places.
- Constantly navigate motor vehicle traffic conditions.
- Typically loud work environment.
