Job Summary

The Office of the Kansas Attorney General is seeking an Investigator to join the Scrap Metal Registration Unit. As an Investigator, you will be responsible for receiving and reviewing registration applications from scrap metal dealers, investigating scrap metal theft-related consumer complaints, and coordinating with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Receive and review registration applications from scrap metal dealers, issuing registration certificates to those who meet the requirements.
  • Investigate scrap metal theft-related consumer complaints, collecting and analyzing evidence to determine if violations of the Scrap Metal Theft Reduction Act or Kansas Consumer Protection Act have occurred.
  • Coordinate with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation regarding concerns with database reporting by scrap metal dealers.
  • Update the list of registered scrap metal dealers on the agency website and inform the Kansas Bureau of Investigation of registration status changes or new scrap metal dealer registrations.
  • Administer and enforce the provisions of the Scrap Metal Theft Reduction Act.
  • Review enforcement cases with the Special Agent in Charge and present approved cases to assistant attorneys general for recommendation of enforcement action.
  • Draft letters and other documents for review and approval by the Special Agent in Charge or assistant attorneys general, preparing written reports, correspondence, subpoenas, memorandums, and other documents as requested.
  • Accept telephone calls and walk-in visits from the public seeking information about scrap metal registration or scrap metal thefts, communicating with law enforcement agencies, consumers, and scrap metal dealers by letter, email, and telephone.
  • Testify as an investigative witness in court and in administrative proceedings.
  • Participate in training and public outreach activities as needed.
  • Review and update standard operating procedures and processes as necessary.
  • Assist the other registration and licensing units with registration processing.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a high school accredited by the Kansas state board of education or the equivalent.
  • Ability to effectively testify in court.
  • Possess a valid driver's license.
  • Minimum of one year of experience interacting with clients, customers, or the public in a social service, customer service, or problem resolution setting.
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills.
  • Exceptional attention to detail.
  • Strong proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Adobe Acrobat.

Preferred Requirements

  • Minimum of three years of investigative experience.
  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in business administration, public administration, communications, criminal justice, or related fields.

Travel

The main work location for this Investigator position is at 120 SW 10th Avenue, Topeka, Kansas. However, the Investigator is expected to travel to locations required to competently and diligently discharge the assigned duties. Regular in-state travel may be required.
