Job Overview

Position Title: Accountant

Department: Finance

Position Type: Full-Time

Reports To: Finance Director and/or Senior Accountant

Salary Range: $61,000-$76,000

Position Summary:

The City of Pontiac is on the lookout for a meticulous and well-organized Accountant to enhance our Finance Department. This role is essential for maintaining accurate financial documentation, generating reports, and ensuring adherence to both state and federal financial regulations. The Accountant will significantly contribute to the fiscal stability of the City while assisting the Finance Director with budgeting, financial forecasting, and audit preparations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Financial Reporting: Ensure the accuracy of financial records by preparing and maintaining general ledger entries, financial statements, and comprehensive reports.
  • Budgeting: Support the annual budget preparation process and monitor spending to align with budgetary guidelines.
  • Accounts Payable/Receivable: Oversee the processing of invoices, payments, and receipts, ensuring timely account reconciliations.
  • Bank Reconciliation: Conduct monthly reconciliations of bank statements to uphold accuracy in financial records.
  • Fixed Asset Management: Manage the tracking and capitalization of fixed assets, ensuring compliance with relevant policies.
  • Month-End Closing: Facilitate the month-end closing process, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial reporting.
  • Audit Coordination: Collaborate with external auditors during annual audits, providing necessary documentation and information.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal financial regulations, preparing and submitting required financial reports.
  • Internal Controls: Develop and uphold internal control procedures to protect the City's financial assets.
  • Grant Oversight: Manage the financial aspects of grants, including expenditure tracking and financial reporting.
  • Special Projects: Engage in special financial projects as directed by the Finance Director.
  • Collaboration: Partner with various departments to deliver financial insights and support.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline. CPA or CMA certification is advantageous.
  • Experience: A minimum of 3-5 years in accounting, ideally within government or public sector finance.
  • Skills:
    • In-depth knowledge of accounting principles and practices.
    • Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite.
    • Exceptional analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
    • Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy.
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Capability to work independently as well as collaboratively.

Working Conditions:

  • Primarily office-based with occasional travel for training or meetings.
  • Standard work hours, with some flexibility required for budget cycles and audits.
