Salary Range: $61,000-$76,000
Position Summary:
The City of Pontiac is in search of a meticulous and highly organized Accountant to enhance our Finance Department. This role is essential for maintaining accurate financial documentation, generating reports, and ensuring adherence to both state and federal financial regulations. The Accountant will play a pivotal role in overseeing the City's financial stability and assisting the Finance Director with budgeting, financial strategy, and audit preparations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Financial Reporting: Develop and sustain precise financial records, including general ledger entries, financial statements, and comprehensive reports.
- Budgeting: Aid in crafting the annual budget and monitor spending to ensure compliance with budgetary limits.
- Accounts Payable/Receivable: Oversee the processing of invoices, payments, and receipts, ensuring timely account reconciliations.
- Bank Reconciliation: Conduct monthly bank reconciliations to guarantee accuracy and consistency in financial documentation.
- Fixed Asset Management: Supervise the tracking and capitalization of fixed assets, ensuring compliance with relevant policies.
- Month-End Closing: Manage the month-end closing process, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial reporting.
- Audit Coordination: Collaborate with external auditors during annual audits, providing necessary documentation and information.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensure adherence to local, state, and federal financial regulations, preparing and submitting required financial reports.
- Internal Controls: Establish and maintain internal control procedures to protect the City's assets.
- Grant Oversight: Manage the financial aspects of grants, including tracking expenditures and preparing financial documentation.
- Special Assignments: Engage in and contribute to special financial projects as directed by the Finance Director.
- Interdepartmental Collaboration: Work closely with various departments to provide financial insights and support.
Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline. CPA or CMA certification is preferred.
- Experience: 3-5 years of accounting experience, ideally within government or public sector finance.
- Skills:
- In-depth knowledge of accounting principles and practices.
- Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Exceptional analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
Working Conditions:
- Primarily office-based with occasional travel for training or meetings.
- Standard work hours, with some flexibility required for budget cycles and audits.
