Job Summary

Dartmouth College seeks a highly skilled and experienced professional to serve as the Assistant Director of the Writing Center. This key leadership position is responsible for overseeing and advancing the undergraduate peer-tutoring and Writing Assistant programs at the Institute for Writing and Rhetoric.

Key Responsibilities
  • Recruit, train, and supervise undergraduate tutors and Writing Assistants, including managing quarterly hiring processes and guiding senior staff tutors.
  • Organize and lead regular workshops and training sessions to develop the skills of Writing Center staff and ensure consistent, high-quality support for students.
  • Create quarterly and annual reports detailing tutor capacity, utilization, and performance, as well as the overall impact of the Writing Center.
  • Gather and analyze feedback from Writing Center visitors and campus partners to assess and improve service quality.
  • Track and manage expenses and compensation for Writing Center staff each quarter.
  • Distribute annual awards to tutoring staff.
  • Collaborate with the Program Administrator to reconcile Writing Center expenditures with the Writing Program budget.
  • Lead regular training sessions to prepare senior student staff to conduct workshops effectively.
  • Offer guidance and feedback to tutors to foster their professional growth.
  • Organize and lead regular meetings with the student senior staff team to ensure coordination and address any issues.
  • Work with various college offices to align writing tutoring needs and best practices.
  • Coordinate and deliver training for FYSEP and SEAD program staff.
  • Allocate tutors to support students in these programs effectively.
Requirements
  • Masters degree in English, Education, Communication, Writing Studies, or a related field, with coursework in pedagogical theory, multilingual instruction, and academic argumentation.
  • At least three years in writing center roles (e.g., peer tutor, support staff, administrator).
  • Proven experience in supervising students.
  • Familiarity with the ethos of a selective liberal arts college.
  • Solid understanding of writing instruction practices.
  • Strong consensus-building and teamwork skills are essential.
