Overview

The ideal candidate will support the Co-Founders to take the legal function in-house, establish processes, be the hands-on legal go-to for a range of matters for the company, and provide agile, high-quality service to the team.

This role involves working with the Co-Founders to craft and implement a business & legal affairs strategy, establishing the internal function, meeting the day-to-day needs of the label, publishing and artist management companies, and supporting continued scale.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build an operational plan and best practices to ensure a smooth-running department that ensures compliance, protects the business, and supports entrepreneurial growth.
  • Advise on and lead the execution of a range of deals including artist and writer signings, artist management contracts, side artist deals, performance contracts, licensing, brand deals, and more.
  • Play a key role in strategic deals such as distribution partnerships, investments, joint ventures, rights sales and acquisitions, etc.
  • Guide matters of corporate law, vendor agreements, employment law and other areas, including doing initial risk and opportunity assessments and selecting and engaging outside legal experts where needed.
  • Select and implement a contract management software system and/or other processes and tools to track and proactively manage triggers, renewals, obligations and other details of all contracts at the company.
  • Provide direct support of label, publishing and management activities across multiple territories including The Americas, Europe and Africa.
  • Stay abreast of the competitive landscape for core deal types, and how they might vary and evolve across territories.
  • Support the founders, the GM and the Controller in any legal aspects of reporting requirements to investors and other key partners.
  • Adapt to added responsibilities as business or market conditions dictate.

Requirements

  • 8 or more years of experience as a practicing, bar admitted music industry attorney.
  • Ideally come with a mix of experience across music law firm, label and publishing, with a command of a range of deal types from signings, to licensing, to M&A and more.
  • Strong exposure to international music business required, with direct experience supporting activities in Europe and Africa highly desired.
  • Excellent listening, needs assessment, ideation, problem solving, negotiation, contract drafting and deal closing skills.
  • A service and solution-oriented approach to supporting the legal needs of all company departments.
  • Prior experience setting up the legal function in a fast-growing music company a plus.
  • Comfortable being highly agile and responsive in a fast-moving deadline driven environment.
  • Well networked in the music business and respected by executives, attorneys and creatives on all sides of the negotiation table.
  • Excellent organizational skills to manage high volume and prioritize tasks for cross functional teams.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including note taking, slide making, presentation, project management and influence management.
  • Strong understanding of how deal terms affect budgeting implications in other areas of the business.
  • Advanced skills in Office 365, and/or Google Workspace, including a high level of skill in Sheets and/or Excel, and Slides and/or PowerPoint.
  • Direct experience either selecting, configuring or contributing to improving workflows in a contract management software system for a legal team in a music business environment.
  • Ability to work on site as needed, and to travel with reasonable advance notice.
  • Passion for music and the music business, a deep understanding of the full music ecosystem, an affinity for the label's roster, and a commitment to developing artists' careers and serving their fans.

Salary and Benefits

We offer a competitive salary, incentive and benefits package commensurate with the role and the final hire's experience. The estimated annual salary is $200,000-$240,000, depending on qualifications and location.
