Job Title: Director of Finance and Operations

Pesticide Action Network (PAN) is seeking a seasoned finance and operations leader to join our administrative team in Berkeley, California.

Job Summary

The successful candidate will provide strategic direction and leadership for essential finance and operational activities, reporting directly to the Executive Director and working closely with financial and operational teams.

Key Responsibilities
  • Financial Leadership: Maintain up-to-date budgets, financial reports, and monitor spending, providing budgeting guidance and supporting multi-year future forecasting and scenario planning.
  • Grant Management: Project-based budgeting, grant budget proposals, and financial reporting for grant awards, ensuring accurate release and tracking of restricted funds.
  • Audit and Financial Reporting: Oversee audits and 990 filings, manage financial statements, and ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
  • Fiscal Sponsorees: Provide oversight of financial accounting and budgeting support for PAN's fiscal sponsorees, ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with the fundraising, administration, and program teams to ensure seamless integration of financial and operational activities.
  • Compliance and Standards: Process and approve financial and contractual agreements, ensuring adherence to best practices, internal controls, and risk management.
  • Board Communication: Support Board and organizational financial communication, providing exceptional skills in translating complex budget information to staff and the Board.
Requirements
  • At least 4 years of experience directing finance and accounting in a nonprofit setting, preferably at an advocacy or social justice organization.
  • Ability to lead finance and operations to ensure organizational goals are achieved, with a track record of efficiency in operational and financial processes.
  • Experience in managing other staff, assessing workloads, delegating effectively, supporting team members, and managing timely outcomes while maintaining a balanced and productive environment that supports the professional development of staff.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate financial management concepts to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Bachelor's Degree preferred, with budgeting and forecasting experience, proficiency in MS Excel and Salesforce, and experience in MIP accounting (preferred but not required).
  • Experience in leading nonprofit operations and administration, with a willingness to learn and use Google Workspace, Smartsheet, Slack, and Zoom.
  • Interest in, understanding of, and commitment to the mission, vision, and values of PAN.
