Field Engineer for Outside Plant Operations

Job Overview:

The Outside Plant (OSP) Field Engineer is responsible for executing engineering tasks at various job sites or in the field. This role involves collecting field measurements, data, photographs, and notes for a range of work orders, attachment and occupancy applications, permits, developer plans, and other related OSP engineering functions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collect, organize, and present OSP field engineering design specifications and notes as directed by Network Planners and Engineers.
  • Assess, recommend, and address work order challenges, documenting any discrepancies encountered in the field and reporting back to the Network Engineer.
  • Assist in validating and maintaining land base and Continuing Property Records (CPR) for outside plant cable and pole documentation.
  • Field, validate, and respond to pole Notice of Intents (NOI), Pole Application Requests (PARs), and Conduit Occupancy Requests (CORs) received from electric utilities and carriers.
  • Compile and prepare necessary joint use and permit information for applications submitted by Network Engineering to other utilities or municipal authorities for approval.
  • Support field audits as necessary.
  • Inspect poles, guy strands, conduits, manholes, measure aerial and underground distances, and other OSP support structure requirements.
  • Collaborate with engineering firms, developers, authorities, and other utilities to obtain plans for new developments, commercial complexes, public improvements, and projects requiring utility placement or rearrangement.
  • Evaluate make-ready estimates received and identify solutions to minimize costs.
  • Perform other related OSP engineering duties as required.

Education Requirements:

  • A Bachelor's Degree or equivalent from a four-year college.
  • A degree in civil, mechanical, or electrical engineering from an accredited institution is preferred.

Certifications and Licenses:

A valid driver's license is required.

Experience:

1 to 3 years in a related field is preferred.

  • Experience with G/COMMs, Microstation, or AutoCAD drawings is desirable.
  • Prior outside plant experience or a solid understanding of outside plant network elements is beneficial.
  • Experience drafting work orders in G/COMM for adding, upgrading, or removing outside plant facilities based on engineering instructions is preferred.
  • Experience updating landbase records using GPS or state plane coordinates is advantageous.
  • At least 2 years of drafting experience using Microstation or AutoCAD to create and modify scaled drawings is desired.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Familiarity with engineering CAD, costing, and facilities record databases is preferred.
  • Proven experience in customer interaction.
  • Ability to interpret land records effectively.

Supervisory Role:

This position does not entail any supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment:

  • Availability for call-outs, emergencies, and special situations is required.
  • Work may occur at various locations under different conditions.

Physical Demands:

  • Must be capable of lifting, carrying, setting up, and taking down equipment, as well as climbing ladders.
  • May involve pulling and lifting heavy equipment.

Salary Range: $70,000-$98,000
