Work Schedule: 12 Hr (7:00:00 AM - 7:30:00 PM)

Overview:
The Patient Care Technician executes a range of clinical and environmental responsibilities under the supervision of the Registered Nurse. The role necessitates specialized training and expertise that aligns with the technician's progression through an accredited nursing program. The technician is actively enrolled in an accredited nursing institution. This position embodies the Rush mission, vision, and ICARE values while adhering to Rush policies and procedures.

Key Responsibilities:
ASSISTS THE RN IN PATIENT CARE DELIVERY

  • Reports to the designated Registered Nurse for assignment of tasks.
  • Ensures a secure patient environment.
  • Prioritizes tasks based on patient and unit needs, under the guidance of the Registered Nurse.
  • Participates in the execution of tailored care plans as directed by the Registered Nurse.
  • Supports patients with daily living activities.
  • Accurately gathers patient information and documents all care in the appropriate records.
  • Conducts routine procedures, treatments, and specimen collections.
  • Exhibits aseptic technique when required.
  • Assists the nurse or physician with advanced procedures.
  • Helps manage uncomplicated tubes and drains.
  • Performs specific patient care tasks such as blood glucose monitoring and specimen collection.
  • Demonstrates awareness of age-specific factors and developmental stages.
  • Promptly communicates changes in patient condition to the appropriate Registered Nurse.
FACILITATES PATIENT TRANSPORT AND ITEM MOVEMENT

  • Assists with patient admissions, discharges, and transport.
  • Transports laboratory specimens and patient belongings as necessary.
  • Obtains blood products, supplies, and equipment as required.

EFFECTIVELY UTILIZES TECHNOLOGY

  • Demonstrates proficiency in using the telephone and patient call systems.
  • Exhibits competence in utilizing EPIC.
  • Shows proficiency in operating unit-specific monitors, pumps, and other equipment.
MAINTAINS A SAFE AND ORGANIZED ENVIRONMENT

  • Keeps patient rooms safe, organized, and in accordance with unit protocols.
  • Independently orders, organizes, and restocks supplies as per unit specifications.
  • Replenishes patient room supplies.
  • Maintains emergency supply readiness.
DISPLAYS PROFESSIONALISM IN INTERACTIONS

  • Communicates relevant information to team members throughout the shift and to the incoming shift.
  • Coordinates break times and communicates departure and return times following unit protocols.
  • Exhibits initiative and self-direction in work practices.

Qualifications:

Current enrollment in an accredited Baccalaureate or Master's entry-level nursing program with satisfactory grades upon hire and annually thereafter.

Completion of a fundamental nursing course covering basic nursing skills, including vital signs and activities of daily living.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Successful completion of the institutional screening examination.
Ability to address simple problems effectively.
Strong communication and customer service skills.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to navigate throughout the Medical Center and remain standing or walking for most of the designated shift.

Capability to lift or carry objects weighing 35-40 lbs. and assist in positioning patients, some of whom may exceed 300 lbs.

Work conditions involve performing tasks where carelessness could lead to injury or illness and/or exposure to potentially infectious materials and/or strong chemical agents.
