Overview

The Veterans Health Administration is seeking a dedicated full-time Patient Care Technician to join our Community Living Center & Rehabilitation Unit team. This role involves collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to deliver exceptional care to a diverse group of patients with intricate needs, including those in general medicine, orthopedic, vascular, and surgical recovery. The primary goal is to assist patients in achieving their highest level of functioning through support with activities of daily living (ADLs).

1. Permanent employees of the Veterans Health Administration and its outreach facilities. 2. All other current, permanent VA employees nationwide.

Key Responsibilities

The Patient Care Technician will undertake various personal care tasks, which may include but are not limited to: hydration, nutrition assistance, mobility support, bathing, skin care, and repositioning patients. Additionally, responsibilities will encompass oral hygiene, grooming, and the use of assistive devices to facilitate hygiene tasks for veterans.

Technical Responsibilities

The Patient Care Technician will execute a variety of diagnostic support functions. It is essential to identify and report any deviations from normal health indicators to the supervising registered nurse. This includes recognizing significant changes in patient conditions, such as severe vomiting or skin breakdown, and communicating these observations promptly.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • All candidates selected for VA employment in designated testing positions are subject to drug screening prior to appointment.
  • Selective Service Registration is mandatory for males born after December 31, 1959.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English is required.
  • Probationary period may be required.
  • Background/security investigation is necessary.
  • Completion of an online onboarding process is mandatory.
  • Must pass a pre-employment physical examination.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is required for all Veterans Health Administration personnel.
  • Compliance with the COVID-19 vaccination program is mandatory for all Veterans Health Administration personnel.
Qualifications

Applicants who are in the process of completing educational or certification/licensure requirements may be tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all qualifications are met.

Basic Requirements:
  • U.S. Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens are unavailable.
  • Experience or Education
    • Six months of general experience demonstrating the ability to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills for the role; OR
    • One year of education beyond high school with relevant coursework; OR
    • Completion of a specialized training program related to the Patient Care Technician role may also satisfy the experience requirements.
May qualify under the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (applicable only to current VHA employees in this role).

Physical Requirements:

Physical demands include extended periods of standing and walking, along with regular strenuous physical exertion. Patient care activities necessitate frequent bending, lifting, and other physical activities using appropriate body mechanics and assistive devices.
