About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Machine Vision Systems Engineer to join our team at Tesla. As a key member of our engineering team, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and implementing machine vision systems for our manufacturing processes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Integrate vision systems, including machine vision, barcode readers, robotic vision, and equipment vision monitoring systems, for manufacturing lines.
  • Learn and adapt vendor vision systems to Tesla's infrastructure.
  • Lead vision systems updates, upgrades, and replacements on all equipment.
  • Develop expertise in common vision systems, including Cognex, Keyence, Teledyne, SICK, Fanuc, KUKA, Dalsa, and others.
  • Connect vision systems to network infrastructure through different protocols, such as EtherCAT, Profinet, and TPC/IP.
  • Debug and troubleshoot vision systems deployments to maximize cycle time and uptime.
  • Participate in initial equipment conceptual development and balance product specifications, process requirements, layout complexity, cost, and lead-time limits.
  • Commission vision cameras for 2D/3D part inspection and guidance of machinery.
  • Participate in Tesla controls specification and standard creation, release to Vendor, and quote technical evaluation.
  • Train and equip Sustaining Team to support vision systems after deployment into production.
  • Establish test plans and vision systems test plan execution.
Requirements
  • BS, MS, or PhD in mechanical, electrical, computer science, or another engineering discipline, with 4 to 7 years of machine vision systems experience in automation equipment.
  • Strong understanding of engineering fundamentals and ability to apply them towards manufacturing process development.
  • Superior practical knowledge in selection of cameras, lenses, optics, lighting, and other hardware for image capture and processing.
  • Strong analytical, mathematical, and statistical background and ability to understand and explain theory behind vision system algorithms.
  • Ability to travel.
  • Experience in high-volume manufacturing is highly desired.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Deep Learning and AI.
  • Experience with PC-based vision platforms.
