As a key member of our Cooperative Extension program, you will be responsible for implementing an extension education and applied problem-solving research program in sustainable forest management on both private and public lands for Plumas, Sierra, and Lassen Counties.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and implement a research and extension program to address high-priority issues in forest resource management and sustainable use of forest resources in the three counties.
  • Work with landowners, government agencies, and non-governmental organizations to reduce risks of wildfire and manage post-wildfire revegetation.
  • Provide expertise and leadership in forest sustainability and resilience, addressing barriers to active forest management and topics such as range-wide forest fuel accumulation.
  • Develop and conduct applied research and demonstration projects to address issues such as sustainable forest stewardship, forest fuels management, fire resilience, postfire reforestation, water quality, and carbon sequestration.
  • Collaborate with UC faculty and specialists, the private timber industry, the US Forest Service, and regional NGOs to conduct applied research projects.
  • Disseminate science-based research results and educational information to inform clientele using a variety of methods, including individual consultations, presentations, workshops, short courses, field demonstrations, and electronic tools.
Requirements
  • A minimum of a Master's degree in forest management, forest ecology, wildland fire science, watershed management, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in forest management practices and the ability to take and pass the California Registered Professional Foresters Licensing examination within five years of appointment.
  • Lived experience working with and preferably in Tribal or Indigenous communities.
  • Experience in emergency and/or disaster planning and management or related fields.
  • Experience with community-led or community-based participatory research and extension methodology.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as a team member with industry and other stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
  • A general familiarity with Northern California forest conditions and societal and ecological variables.
  • An additional degree in Native American studies and/or experience working with Tribal or other Indigenous communities in rural communities and natural resource-based economies.
  • Passion and desire to pursue a career in Cooperative Extension.
  • Experience in building partnerships and with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively plan projects, manage teams, and implement an applied research and outreach program.
