Job Description

The University of California, Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR) is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Forestry and Natural Resources Area Advisor to join our team. This is an exciting opportunity to work with regional and Tribal communities to promote forest health and fire resilience.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct a locally-based research, extension, and education program to address high-priority issues related to forest resource management and sustainable use of forest resources in Plumas, Sierra, and Lassen Counties.
  • Provide expertise and leadership in forest sustainability and resilience, addressing barriers to active forest management and topics such as range-wide forest fuel accumulation.
  • Develop and conduct applied research and demonstration projects to address issues such as sustainable forest stewardship, forest fuels management, fire resilience, post-fire reforestation, water quality, and carbon sequestration.
  • Work with landowners, government agencies, and non-governmental organizations to reduce risks of wildfire and manage post-wildfire revegetation.
  • Develop and implement extension education programs to promote forest health and fire resilience, including training for Fire Safe Councils and Volunteer Fire Departments.
Requirements
  • Master's degree in forest management, forest ecology, wildland fire science, watershed management, or a closely related field.
  • Experience in forest management practices and the ability to take and pass the California Registered Professional Foresters Licensing examination within five years of appointment.
  • Lived experience working with, and preferably in, Tribal or Indigenous communities.
  • Experience in emergency and/or disaster planning and management or related fields.
  • Experience with community-led or community-based participatory research and extension methodology.
Preferred Qualifications
  • General familiarity with Northern California forest conditions and societal and ecological variables.
  • Additional degree in Native American studies or experience working with Tribal or other Indigenous communities in rural communities and natural resource-based economies.
  • Passion and desire to pursue a career in Cooperative Extension.
  • Experience in building partnerships and with multidisciplinary teams.
