ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF AN AUTOMOTIVE WIND TUNNEL TECHNICIAN:

Job responsibilities will evolve and be assigned based on individual expertise. Specific skills in mechanical and electrical maintenance, instrumentation, calibration, computing, and automotive mechanics are essential.

The technician will be cross-functional and expected to support all operational functions, including:

1. Test cell operation
2. Verification of vehicle instrumentation quality
3. Installation of test vehicles in the facility
4. Setup of test hardware on test articles
5. General test support activities
6. Programming automated test procedures using wind tunnel control software
7. Mechanical component assembly and maintenance tasks.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, AND/OR SKILL REQUIREMENTS:


A minimum of two (2) years of college coursework in engineering, automotive, skilled trades, or related fields, along with two (2) years of relevant experience. Additional relevant education may substitute for part of the experience.


Essential skills for this position include:

Vehicle Mechanics:

This role requires the individual to work on vehicle chassis setup for wind tunnel testing, including tire changes, shock/strut replacements, and the installation/removal of vehicle components.

A thorough understanding of vehicle suspension, hydraulic systems, motors, mechanical screw devices, bearings, and rotating equipment is necessary. Precision-level work with an understanding of assemblies, mechanical fit, and torque specifications is required.


Fabrication:
The individual must possess a solid working knowledge of machine shop tools for building and assembling fixtures and components (tools include lathe, mill, brake, shear, drill press, and band-saw).
Maintenance:
The technician will support mechanical and/or electrical/instrumentation maintenance activities.

Test Operations Controls and Data Acquisition:

The individual should have a working knowledge of instrumentation, controls, and data acquisition sufficient to support wind tunnel operations and programming of test sequences (LabVIEW experience or equivalent is a plus).


Computer Skills:
Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets, and file system management is mandatory (additional skills in database programming and computer networking are advantageous).
Teamwork:
The individual must be willing to collaborate within a team and also take on leadership roles in defined tasks.

Troubleshooting:
The individual should be skilled in a systematic approach to problem identification and resolution.

Customer Service:
The individual should possess character traits and a personality geared towards customer service, along with clear communication skills.
