Job Title: Environmental Scientist

Job Summary:

We are seeking an experienced Environmental Scientist to join our team at the Department of Toxic Substances Control. As an Environmental Scientist, you will be responsible for managing environmental investigation and cleanup projects, reviewing technical reports, and working with various stakeholders to ensure that our decisions are technically sound and legally defensible.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage environmental investigation and cleanup projects, including assessment, investigation, and remediation of contaminated sites.
  • Review technical reports and other documents, including Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments, Preliminary Endangerment Assessments, and site characterization workplans and reports.
  • Work with DTSC support groups, including geologists, engineers, toxicologists, lawyers, and public information officers, to ensure that our decisions are technically sound and legally defensible.
  • Apply high-level knowledge of recognized environmental conditions, subsurface investigations, and the nature and extent of contamination.
  • Plan and manage a workload consisting of multiple projects with sometimes conflicting deadlines to ensure that all assignments are completed on time and within budget.
Desirable Qualifications:
  • Work experience with assessment, investigation, and/or cleanup of contaminated sites, including Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments, Preliminary Endangerment Assessments, and site characterization.
  • Verbal and written communication skills and experience in communicating with a wide range of audiences, including the public, federal, state, and local agencies.
  • Coursework in environmental science, chemistry, geology, or a field related to assessment, investigation, or cleanup of contaminated sites.
Working Conditions:

A hybrid telework schedule may be available for this position, with a requirement to be in the office two days a week.
