Position Overview:
ARS Aleut Construction is in search of an Environmental Control Technician to contribute to various projects across the nation.
The selected candidate will execute Environmental Technician responsibilities as directed by management. This role may require travel to isolated sites for sample collection with minimal oversight.
The ideal candidate should be self-driven and capable of working autonomously.
Strong problem-solving skills are essential, along with the ability to implement solutions that adhere to ARS Aleut's safety and quality standards.
Fieldwork in challenging environments is a requirement.
The technician may engage directly with clients while supporting diverse teams and initiatives.
This role necessitates the capacity to travel to both domestic and international sampling sites; it is expected that travel will exceed 50% of the time.
The specific responsibilities may encompass tasks in one or more of the following areas, in addition to other duties as assigned:Sampling various media types, including but not limited to air, groundwater, surface water, biota, soil, sediments, and both solid and liquid waste.
Conducting sampling for a range of radiological and hazardous materials, including but not limited to radioisotopes, metals, volatile organic compounds, semi-volatile organic compounds, PCBs, particulates, and PFAS/PFOA. Preparing sampling kits and apparatus for operational use.
Preparing groundwater wells for sampling.Packing and shipping samples in compliance with laboratory protocols and federal regulations.
Troubleshooting, calibrating, repairing, inspecting, and testing measurement and testing equipment.
Decontaminating field sampling tools using physical and chemical methods.
Assisting with groundwater sampling well installation, rehabilitation, development, and purging.
Generating and managing radioactive and/or hazardous waste associated with environmental operations.
Preparing chains of custody, shipping documentation, and air bills as required to facilitate the transfer and shipment of samples to analytical laboratories. Maintaining detailed sampling logs and records of sampling activities.
Producing complete, accurate, and concise documentation.Conducting inventory of sampling and analytical support equipment.
Engaging in waste management activities such as packaging, sampling, shipment preparation, and securement under the guidance of a Waste Shipper or other supervisory personnel.
Upholding quality control standards and procedures for precise measurement and documentation.Data entry and other job-related tasks as assigned.
Qualifications and Requirements:
Demonstrated commitment to safety and quality work is essential. A high school diploma or GED is required; an associate degree is preferred. 1 to 3 years of relevant work experience is preferred (e.g., construction, environmental, radiological, analytical, geology). The ability to travel for short and long-term assignments, exceeding 50% of the time, is necessary.
Familiarity with safety and environmental regulations is advantageous.
Strong written and verbal communication skills are required for effective interaction with clients and project teams.
Mechanical aptitude with experience in operating and troubleshooting tools and power equipment is necessary.
Self-motivated individuals who can work independently in remote settings without direct supervision are preferred. A 40-hour HAZWOPER certification and current annual 8-hour refresher are required.
ARS Aleut will provide necessary training to employees prior to employment, if needed.
Ability to complete and demonstrate proficiency in safety training programs provided by ARS Aleut (e.g., radiation safety, asbestos, PCB, RCRA/hazardous wastes, DOT/IATA, FA/CPR) is required. Capability to read and comprehend complex instructions, procedures, and requirements is essential.
Willingness to work in field conditions during adverse weather is expected.Basic computer skills and literacy, including proficiency in the MS Office suite for generating reports, spreadsheets, and data, are necessary.
Possession of a valid driver's license in good standing is required. The ability to travel by air or automobile for extended periods is necessary.Successful completion of a pre-employment physical, including a pulmonary function test for respirator use, is required.
Passing pre-employment and routine drug and alcohol screenings is mandatory for accessing federal facilities.
Ability to pass a pre-employment background check, which includes up to a 10-year employment verification, DMV records search, criminal records search, and verification of education and certifications, is essential.
Level Determination:
Technician levels (I, II, or III) will be determined based on the candidate's experience and education.
Levels are generally defined as follows:
NOTE:
Management will use this as guidance for entry and promotions, but may also consider other factors such as certifications, performance, safety, and quality of work in promotional decisions.
An associate degree may substitute for up to 1 year of experience.A bachelor's degree may substitute for up to 2 years of experience.
Level I - 0 to 3 years of experience and basic knowledge in the relevant fields.
Level II - 3 to 10 years of experience and general knowledge in the relevant fields.
Level III - 10+ years of experience and advanced knowledge in the relevant fields.
Supervision Exercised:
Level II and Level III Technicians may oversee less experienced staff when multi-person teams are deployed to assignments in remote locations lacking dedicated onsite Supervisors and Managers.
Supervisory responsibilities will be clarified by management prior to field assignments to ensure expectations, responsibilities, accountabilities, and authorities are clearly understood by team members.
Working and Physical Conditions:
Tasks may require the candidate to wear respirators and other personal protective equipment (PPE). Candidates must meet site-specific fit-for-duty physical requirements and obtain any additional regulatory medical clearances (i.e., HAZWOPER) as necessary to support projects.
Work may occur in various locations, including job sites undergoing remediation, demolition projects, operational facilities, and remote outdoor settings.
There is potential exposure to hazardous substances and environments (e.g., radioactive materials, chemicals, biota, vegetation, water, temperature extremes, weather, slip-trip-fall hazards, heavy equipment, electricity and hazardous energy, falling objects, hand and power tools, and heavy machinery). ARS Aleut maintains a comprehensive safety management program to mitigate these hazards and ensure a safe, Zero Incidents working environment.
Candidates must possess the physical ability to perform moderate to heavy work, including lifting, lowering, and carrying up to 50 pounds (lifting more than 50 pounds requires the use of a two-person 'buddy system'), walking, kneeling, squatting, reaching, and manipulating sampling equipment.
Ability to walk long distances (e.g., 1 to 2 miles) on rough or muddy terrain, up and down slopes, while carrying sampling gear, is required to reach sampling locations.
