Job Overview

The Sterile Processing Technician plays a crucial role in maintaining the safety and quality of surgical instruments and equipment. This position involves the decontamination, assembly, and inspection of medical instruments, alongside the operation of sterilization equipment. Under the supervision of the Supervisor, the technician ensures that all processes adhere to infection control standards, thereby contributing to a secure environment for patient care.

Key Responsibilities

Instrument Management

  • Conducts decontamination, assembly, and inspection of surgical instruments in compliance with departmental protocols and infection control measures to enhance healthcare service quality.
  • Maintains an up-to-date understanding of instrument sets and trays by accurately identifying items on departmental count sheets.
  • Operates steam and gas autoclaves, cart washers, and ultrasonic cleaners to sterilize instruments and equipment, while initiating and interpreting biological and Bowie-Dick tests to uphold surgical equipment quality control.
  • Inspects linen quality and ensures proper packaging according to departmental guidelines before dispatching to surgical units. Rotates and replenishes sterile supplies in the stockroom to meet infection control standards.

Quality Assurance and Patient Safety

  • Executes necessary biological, Bowie Dick, and integrator testing, meticulously recording results to comply with JCAHO sterility testing standards.
  • Assembles, inspects, and packages all instruments following infection control protocols to guarantee a safe environment for high-quality patient care.
  • Adheres to all departmental and hospital policies, ensuring compliance with safety, quality assurance, and infection control standards.

Team Collaboration

  • Engages with colleagues in a respectful and compassionate manner, fostering a collaborative work environment that enhances overall performance.
  • Contributes to personal and departmental growth through participation in educational programs and specialized training.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Undertakes other duties as assigned or requested by the Supervisor.

Required Qualifications

  • Completion of Sterile Processing Department apprenticeship or prior experience as a Sterile Processing Technician.
