Job Overview

Position: Registered Nurse (RN)

Reports To: Director of Nursing/Nurse Manager

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

The Registered Nurse provides both direct and indirect patient care within an inpatient environment. This role involves effective communication with medical staff, including physicians and therapy departments, regarding any alterations in a patient's clinical status, diagnostic results, and symptomatology. The RN must demonstrate the ability to respond promptly and accurately to changes in patient conditions or treatment responses. Furthermore, the nurse is expected to perform general nursing responsibilities under appropriate supervision.

Key Responsibilities

The essential functions of this role include, but are not limited to:

  1. Administering medications correctly, taking into account the patient's age and clinical condition.
  2. Adhering to the five rights of medication administration to minimize errors.
  3. Providing patient care tailored to the specific needs of the patient population.
  4. Conducting comprehensive assessments on all patients and performing necessary reassessments in accordance with established policies.
  5. Adjusting care plans based on patient responses to treatment and evaluating the overall effectiveness of care on a daily basis.
  6. Collaborating with therapy staff to ensure an interdisciplinary approach to patient care, documenting patient progress in rehabilitation.
  7. Assisting physicians during procedures and performing technical and manual tasks as required.
  8. Effectively managing and reassessing pain, employing appropriate pain management strategies, and educating patients and families on pain control.
  9. Ensuring patient safety and minimizing the risk of healthcare errors during all aspects of patient care.
  10. Developing educational plans based on identified learning needs and assessing the effectiveness of the teaching provided, including family involvement as appropriate.
  11. Demonstrating competency in performing treatments and services within the scope of licensure.
  12. Communicating clearly and effectively with the Director of Nursing, colleagues, physicians, and therapy staff.
  13. Integrating nursing care plans with therapy treatment plans to achieve optimal patient functioning.
  14. Participating in patient care conferences to discuss care strategies.
  15. Providing age-appropriate care for patients across the adult, geriatric, and general populations.
  16. Obtaining intravenous access as necessary and administering IV medications within the scope of practice.
  17. Performing venipuncture as ordered to assist in patient care and diagnosis.
  18. Conducting skin and wound assessments each shift and providing wound care as prescribed.
  19. Exhibiting flexibility, organization, and the ability to function effectively under pressure to ensure quality patient care.
  20. Completing quality control checks, including temperature recordings and medication orders, while ensuring compliance with documentation standards.
  21. Addressing the psychosocial needs of patients and families, coordinating with social services as needed.
  22. Operating medical equipment safely and correctly, supervising patient care as necessary.
  23. Adhering to corporate compliance codes and participating in annual review programs and in-services.
  24. Performing additional duties as assigned to facilitate the smooth operation of the healthcare facility.
Qualifications
  • Current Registered Nurse Licensure in Louisiana.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
