Position Overview

The Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP), supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, aims to assist undergraduate students who are economically disadvantaged and/or identify with historically underrepresented groups in healthcare professions. Participants are chosen based on their academic achievements and commitment to pursuing careers in health professions. SHPEP is a national academic enrichment initiative offered at multiple medical center locations across the country.

At Columbia University Irving Medical Center, the program provides career exposure in Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, and Physical Therapy to eligible students at no cost. Over the six-week duration, students receive intensive and personalized preparation for health professions schools. The support offered to participants enhances their competitiveness as applicants to health professions programs. Each year, SHPEP serves a cohort of scholars who are rising college sophomores and juniors.

A significant aspect of the program focuses on academic enrichment, aiming to improve scholars' performance in pre-health science courses. Supplemental courses are available to help scholars enhance their learning and study skills. In addition to coursework, scholars engage in practical experiences and career exposure seminars.

Responsibilities

SHPEP Program Facilitators will oversee the supervision, guidance, and education of college students enrolled in the summer program. Specific duties include:

  • Understanding the overall goals and objectives of the program.
  • Participating in job orientation and training sessions.
  • Leading orientation sessions for program scholars.
  • Being available for the entire duration of the program.
  • Leading a small group of approximately 10 students within the cohort.
  • Taking attendance at classes and program sessions.
  • Assisting with grading course assignments.
  • Facilitating workshops and sessions on various topics.
  • Attending and supporting all program sessions.
  • Holding weekly office hours.
  • Participating in weekly meetings with preceptors and program administrators.
  • Serving as a Resident Assistant for SHPEP scholars.
  • Coordinating and hosting social activities for program scholars.
  • Completing general clerical duties as assigned.
  • Providing feedback on interactions with program scholars.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Full-time CUIMC students with education and training in science and/or mathematics.
  • Demonstrated leadership and organizational skills.
  • Previous teaching experience is beneficial but not required.
