Position Overview:
This role involves performing complex professional accounting tasks related to the maintenance, revision, and development of accounting systems. The incumbent will analyze financial data, provide advisory services, and execute various related responsibilities as necessary.


Key Responsibilities:


The Accountant III is distinguished from the Chief Accountant by its focus on intricate accounting tasks for a fiscal program or a significant segment of a larger initiative. This position is responsible for maintaining and controlling master accounting records and preparing comprehensive financial reports for all major funding sources.

The following duties exemplify the responsibilities of this position:

  • Collecting, compiling, classifying, and evaluating financial data.
  • Preparing trial balances and making necessary adjusting and closing entries.
  • Verifying and analyzing financial data while preparing financial statements and reports.
  • Supervising junior personnel involved in fiscal control.
  • Recommending and implementing changes to forms, procedures, and policies governing accounting functions.
  • Conducting internal reviews to ensure the effectiveness and efficiency of accounting systems and procedures.
  • Preparing reports for the determination and reporting of Federal and State expenditures and fund balances.
  • Collaborating with agency officials on financial matters.
  • Assisting management by interpreting accounting data and trends, explaining the implications of financial information.
  • Preparing quarterly financial reports on the status of appropriations, allotments, and encumbrances for all departments.

Qualifications:


Applicants should possess a combination of education and experience equivalent to a degree from an accredited institution with a major in accounting or business administration, including coursework in accounting, along with three years of relevant professional accounting experience.


Knowledge and Skills:


Candidates must demonstrate knowledge of:

  • Principles and practices of commercial and governmental accounting.
  • Preparation and analysis of financial statements and reports.
  • Public fiscal administration, including budgeting and financial reporting.
  • Office practices and procedures.
  • Supervisory principles and practices.


Additionally, the ability to:

  • Develop and implement accounting methods, techniques, and procedures.
  • Plan, assign, and oversee the work of subordinates.
  • Prepare accurate and comprehensive reports and standards.
  • Analyze data, identify errors, and rectify inconsistencies in accounting records.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with colleagues.
