Position Overview

Ares Management Corporation is on the lookout for a seasoned and motivated professional to collaborate closely with the Private Equity and Secondaries Environmental, Social, and Governance ("ESG") Lead. The aim is to further integrate and promote ESG principles within the organizational culture, investment strategies, and operational frameworks. This role is based in New York City and will involve working alongside investment and portfolio management teams, as well as other internal stakeholders, to implement a thorough business strategy for ESG and ensure consistent execution of these initiatives across the firm.

Reporting Structure

Reports to: Principal, Private Equity and Secondaries ESG Lead

Key Responsibilities

The Senior ESG Associate will primarily support the Ares Secondaries group in developing and executing programs that align with the firmwide ESG integration strategy. Ares Secondaries has been a pioneer in secondary markets for over three decades, engaging in a variety of alternative asset classes, including private equity, real estate, infrastructure, and credit. Throughout our extensive history in this domain, we have invested in numerous partnership interests, facilitating unique and proprietary transactions through our well-established relationships with institutional investors, fund sponsors, and market advisors. The Secondaries team comprises over 150 professionals across multiple locations.

This role will provide ongoing support to the Secondaries teams regarding ESG due diligence during the investment evaluation process and will engage with sponsors post-transaction to advance a comprehensive ESG agenda. Regular interaction with the Ares Investor Relations and Relationship Management teams will be essential in serving external clients.

Specific Duties Include:

  • Collaborate with embedded ESG Champions within the Secondaries team to enhance ESG integration strategies aimed at delivering measurable outcomes.
  • Assist in mitigating significant ESG risks through the scalable implementation of ESG due diligence. Work with ESG champions embedded within investment strategies to execute monitoring and engagement strategies focused on risk mitigation and value creation from ESG factors, including climate change and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).
  • Establish a consistent and scalable methodology for ESG data collection, validation, and reporting for both internal and external stakeholders. Collaborate with the Investor Relations team to develop ESG content for limited partner reporting.
  • Support limited partner ESG due diligence on Ares, including addressing inquiries regarding our ESG practices, policies, and case studies.
  • Contribute to thought leadership initiatives centered on ESG in the secondaries market.
  • Assist with select ESG initiatives within the Private Equity sector, such as ESG data collection and portfolio company engagements.
  • Aid the broader ESG team with project management and the development of internal and external deliverables.

Qualifications

Education: A Bachelor's degree is required. An MBA or equivalent degree in finance, economics, or environmental management is strongly preferred.

Required Experience: The ideal candidate will possess a strong desire to enhance Ares' existing ESG processes, demonstrating deep knowledge of ESG integration and data management. They should be an energetic and passionate leader inspired by our mission and values.

  • A minimum of 7 years of experience in ESG-related business practices, investments, and sustainability, preferably within the financial services sector. Experience with alternative asset managers on ESG topics is highly preferred.
  • Strong operational understanding of private markets.
  • Proven experience in identifying, tracking, and reporting on ESG data management and KPIs, including developing systematic processes for consistency and accuracy.
  • General knowledge of financial sector levers for change related to sustainability initiatives.
  • Technical expertise in aggregating and analyzing data to support the screening process for target acquisitions.
  • Familiarity with ESG industry initiatives and reporting frameworks, including PRI, TCFD, SFDR, and EU Taxonomy.

Compensation

The anticipated base salary range for this position is between $150,000 and $180,000. Total compensation may also include a discretionary performance-based bonus. This range considers a wide array of qualifications, including years of relevant experience, education, and other pertinent qualifications specific to the role.
