About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Contamination Control Engineer to join our team at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL). As a member of our Space Environmental Effects Engineering group, you will play a critical role in ensuring the success of our space flight missions by developing and implementing contamination control plans and strategies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop contamination requirements and control plans for space flight hardware
  • Conduct outgassing and material analysis to identify potential contamination sources
  • Provide technical guidance on contamination and related processes, including thermal vacuum testing, precision cleaning, and cleanliness verification
  • Support the verification of contamination requirements and ensure compliance with industry standards
Requirements
  • Bachelor of Science in Physics, Materials Engineering, or a related science/engineering field
  • At least 10 years of experience in contamination engineering for space flight programs
  • Experience with particulate and molecular sampling for analysis, including IEST-STD-CC1246E and ISO-14644 cleanroom certification standards
  • Extensive knowledge of vacuum bakeout, outgassing testing, precision cleaning, and cleanliness verification processes
  • Experience with vacuum and pumping systems, including Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM) and Residual Gas Analyzer (RGA)
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Physics, Materials Engineering, or a related science/engineering field
  • Experience in performing contamination transport analysis and modeling for complex geometries
