Position Overview

The Department of Natural Resource Management at South Dakota State University is seeking candidates for a tenure-track position as an Associate Professor specializing in Bird Ecology and Management. This role is a full-time, 9-month appointment that includes a competitive salary and a comprehensive start-up package.

Key Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be expected to engage in both research and teaching, with responsibilities divided equally between the two. Specific duties include:
  • Delivering undergraduate courses in ornithology, management of upland game birds, and wetland bird ecology and management; contributing to additional courses as needed; and teaching graduate-level courses in their area of expertise.
  • Developing a nationally recognized research program that attracts external funding, supports graduate students, and results in publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Providing mentorship to undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Participating in governance and service activities at the university, college, and departmental levels, as well as engaging in professional service and outreach.
Compensation and Benefits:

Qualifications:

Applicants must possess a completed Ph.D. in avian sciences or a closely related field by the time of hire. Additional requirements include:
  • A demonstrated record of research and scholarly activities in avian ecology, with publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Experience with contemporary statistical and analytical methodologies relevant to the field.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, along with effective interpersonal abilities.
  • Potential for collaboration with various stakeholders on avian ecology issues.
  • A valid driver's license or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire, along with a willingness to travel.
Preferred Qualifications:

Preferred candidates will have:
  • At least one year of postdoctoral or equivalent experience.
  • A research focus on conservation and management of upland game birds, grassland species, or waterbirds.
  • A proven track record in grant writing and securing research funding.
  • Prior teaching experience at the university level, particularly as the instructor of record.
  • Experience working with diverse groups and backgrounds.
  • Collaboration experience with scientists and natural resource agencies.
