Student Support Specialist

Melbourne, Florida, United States Schools (Government) Full time

Role Overview

This is a full-time role, operating from 8:30 AM to 4:36 PM, Monday through Friday.

The position at this level involves significant management responsibilities and accountability for delivering professional support services. The impact of this role extends beyond the immediate work area or professional domain, requiring collaboration with other staff members and the school community to achieve specific objectives related to school administration, operations, or educational programs.

While guidance on targets and goals is provided, the role allows for a degree of autonomy in determining the methods to achieve these objectives. However, this autonomy is generally constrained by established procedures and school policies. Any deviations from these standards will necessitate guidance from senior management.

At this level, business management responsibilities are a key feature. Effectively managing staff to meet expected outcomes is a primary duty. Staff management issues should be resolved with minimal reference to senior management, although more complex cases will require additional guidance. Senior management will receive timely reports and advice, typically limited to matters concerning the immediate work area, service provision, or educational programs, and unlikely to significantly affect overall school operations.

This position requires a mandatory qualification of no less than four years. Professional support roles, such as therapists and psychologists, are characteristic of this level, where standard professional services are delivered. Professional support and guidance will be readily available, and any deviations from established procedures and school policies will require direction from senior management.

An education support class position assists in delivering educational services to students but must not include teaching duties as defined by relevant legislation. Supervision of students is not a requirement unless it is integral to the employee's role or involves individual or small group supervision in controlled circumstances, where the responsibility for students remains with a teacher.

Key Responsibilities

The Student Welfare Officer will play a vital role in enhancing the overall wellbeing and welfare of students under the guidance of the Student Wellbeing Coordinator and the Assistant Principal. The responsibilities include:

  • Collaborating with Year Level Teams, the Executive Team, and the Student Wellbeing Team to provide counseling, support, and therapeutic services to students.
  • Delivering counseling and a variety of therapeutic interventions.
  • Being a visible and approachable presence within the school environment, including the wellbeing area, classrooms, and outdoor spaces.
  • Assisting in the smooth transition of new students into the school.
  • Participating in relevant staff meetings, including Year Level Meetings, Allied Health Team meetings, Care Team meetings, SSG meetings, and Engagement and Wellbeing Meetings.
  • Collaborating closely with families to develop plans, ensure necessary supports are in place, and follow up as needed.
  • Providing wellbeing support for the Disability and Inclusion Program, assisting in the development of Individual Education Plans (IEPs), Behavior Support Plans (BSPs), and other relevant plans.
  • Promoting student wellbeing throughout the school community via staff meetings, newsletters, bulletins, noticeboards, and assemblies.
  • Working cooperatively with community service agencies and referring students/families as necessary.
  • Maintaining accurate and confidential records.
  • Conducting risk assessments and creating safety plans in consultation with students, families, and school-based teams.
  • Proactively developing and delivering positive mental health promotion initiatives within the school.
  • Engaging in case management, including consultation with various stakeholders involved with a student and/or their family.
  • Developing and leading evidence-based programs and groups that empower students to be resourceful and resilient both in school and beyond.
  • Supporting placement students on the school wellbeing team.
  • Performing other duties as directed by the Executive Team and Student Wellbeing Coordinator.
