Position Overview: The New York State is looking for a skilled professional to fill the role of Executive Assistant to Local Government Affairs. This position is essential in guiding a dedicated team to assist municipal governments, formulate policies regarding state and local government interactions, and execute strategies aligned with established guidelines.

  • Support and communicate the objectives of the Governor and the Secretary of State, ensuring these priorities are integrated into the Division's operations.
  • Establish and nurture communication channels and relationships with approximately 1,600 principal municipal governments and their respective associations.
  • Assess and identify the needs of local governments to enhance effective service delivery to their communities.
  • Manage technical assistance, training, and grant programs tailored to meet the requirements of local municipalities.
  • Provide policy recommendations through established reporting structures within the Department of State that foster effective local government service delivery.
  • Guide staff in delivering division services to local governments.
  • Encourage professional development, training, and supervisory practices that cultivate a positive and high-performance workplace culture.
  • Participate in regular meetings with the Deputy Secretary of State, assisting with documentation and follow-up on action items.
  • Deliver consistent, detail-oriented, and professional work products within designated timelines.
  • Engage in meetings with state agencies, advocates, the legislature, and other relevant stakeholders as necessary.
  • Monitor the progress of assignments, project execution, and the fulfillment of deliverables.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

Required Qualifications: A Bachelor's degree along with seven years of relevant professional experience in local government or related governmental roles, including at least two years in a leadership or managerial position.

Substitutions: Four years of professional experience or an associate's degree combined with two years of professional experience may substitute for a Bachelor's degree; a Master's degree may substitute for one year of professional experience; or may replace two years of professional experience.

Preferred Qualifications: Proven experience in a leadership role, whether elected or appointed, within local government or related governmental functions. A background in municipal planning, government finance, economic development, and organizational development is advantageous.
