Overview:

The Senior Surety Underwriter is tasked with driving profitable underwriting outcomes that align with growth and profitability goals through effective risk assessment, relationship management, and strategic book oversight. This role involves managing the underwriting and servicing of both new and renewal accounts for designated agents and producers, ensuring compliance with company standards in underwriting, authority, and pricing. A thorough understanding of AmTrust's mission, vision, and values is essential, as is the commitment to uphold the organization's standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain a profitable portfolio by conducting thorough risk evaluations, pricing strategies, and high-quality service. Ensure adherence to state regulations and corporate underwriting guidelines while operating within granted authority and making necessary referrals to the Home Office.
  • Work collaboratively with the territory team, keeping colleagues and management updated on all relevant issues and activities.
  • In partnership with the Manager, create and execute the territory business strategy, sharing responsibility with the team to achieve territorial objectives.
  • Educate territory staff and clients on underwriting guidelines and protocols, following corporate training standards.
  • Act as the primary referral contact for the territory underwriting team within the Home Office authority.
  • Mentor and work alongside the team to cultivate and sustain external client relationships, which may involve travel within the territory to engage with agents, producers, and nonprofit organizations.
  • Participate actively in industry events, including agency or association conventions, as required.
  • Deliver professional, prompt, and courteous communication and service to external clients and cross-departmental teams to effectively resolve issues related to policyholders and territory producers.
  • Provide essential information and guidance to support staff in processing coverage requests in line with service standards.
  • Collaborate with the territory team on reporting and database updates as necessary.
  • Assist in gathering and sharing competitive insights.
  • Stay informed about market trends and demands.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • A minimum of 3 years of underwriting experience in insurance products, demonstrating comprehensive knowledge of contract surety insurance coverage, risk assessment, and pricing methodologies.
  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience.
  • Proven ability to analyze data and make informed, calculated risk decisions.
  • Capability to contribute effectively to both tactical and strategic planning.
  • Experience in training, coaching, and mentoring individuals from diverse backgrounds within the area of expertise.
  • Commitment to confidentiality.
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills.
  • Willingness to travel up to 25% within the assigned territory and to the Home Office as needed.

Preferred:

  • AFSB designation.
  • Commitment to ongoing education.
