Position Overview:

The Senior Surety Underwriter plays a pivotal role in driving profitable underwriting outcomes that align with the organization's growth and profitability goals. This position involves effective risk assessment, fostering agency relationships, managing the underwriting portfolio, and contributing to both personal and team development. The individual will oversee the underwriting and servicing of new and renewal accounts for designated agents and producers, ensuring adherence to the company's underwriting, authority, and pricing standards. A comprehensive understanding of AmTrust's mission, vision, and values is essential, along with a commitment to uphold the organization's standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain a profitable portfolio through thorough risk evaluation, pricing strategies, and exceptional service, while ensuring compliance with state regulations and corporate underwriting guidelines.
  • Work collaboratively with the territory team, keeping peers and management updated on relevant issues and activities.
  • In partnership with the Manager, formulate and execute the territory business strategy, sharing accountability for achieving territory objectives.
  • Educate territory staff and clients on underwriting preferences and protocols, following corporate training guidelines.
  • Act as the primary referral point for the territory underwriting team within the authority granted by the Home Office.
  • Mentor and work alongside the team to cultivate and sustain external client relationships, which may involve travel within the territory to engage with agents, producers, and nonprofit organizations.
  • Actively participate in industry events, including agency or association conventions, as required.
  • Deliver professional, timely, and courteous communication and service to external clients and cross-departmental teams to effectively resolve policyholder and producer inquiries.
  • Provide essential information and guidance to support staff in processing coverage requests in line with service standards.
  • Collaborate with the territory team on reporting and database updates as necessary.
  • Assist in gathering and sharing competitive insights.
  • Stay informed about market trends and demands.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • A minimum of 3 years of underwriting experience in insurance products, demonstrating a strong technical understanding of contract surety insurance coverage, risk selection, and pricing methodologies.
  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience.
  • Proven ability to analyze data and make informed, calculated risk decisions.
  • Capability to contribute effectively to both tactical and strategic planning.
  • Experience in training, coaching, and mentoring individuals from diverse backgrounds within the field.
  • Commitment to confidentiality.
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills.
  • Willingness to travel up to 25% within the assigned territory and to the Home Office as needed.

Preferred:

  • AFSB designation.
  • Commitment to ongoing education.
