Position Overview:

The Senior Surety Underwriter plays a crucial role in driving profitable underwriting outcomes that align with the organization's growth and profitability goals. This position involves effective risk assessment, fostering agency relationships, managing the portfolio, and contributing to both personal and team development. The underwriter will oversee the underwriting and servicing of new and renewal accounts for designated agents and producers, ensuring adherence to company standards in underwriting, authority, and pricing.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain a profitable portfolio through thorough risk evaluation, appropriate pricing, and excellent service, while ensuring compliance with state regulations and corporate underwriting guidelines.
  • Work collaboratively with the territory team, keeping peers and management updated on all relevant issues and activities.
  • Partner with management to create and execute the territory business strategy, sharing responsibility for achieving territory objectives.
  • Educate territory staff and clients on underwriting guidelines and protocols in line with corporate training initiatives.
  • Act as the primary referral point for the territory underwriting team within the authority granted by the Home Office.
  • Mentor and collaborate with team members to cultivate and sustain external client relationships, which may involve travel to meet with agents and industry associations.
  • Engage in industry events as necessary, including agency or association conventions.
  • Deliver professional, prompt, and courteous communication and service to external clients and internal teams to effectively resolve inquiries related to policyholders and producers.
  • Provide essential information and support to staff to facilitate coverage requests in accordance with service standards.
  • Collaborate with the territory team on reporting and database updates as needed.
  • Assist in collecting and sharing competitive market insights.
  • Stay informed about market trends and demands.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • A minimum of 3 years of underwriting experience in insurance products, demonstrating expertise in contract surety insurance coverage, risk selection, and pricing methodologies.
  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience.
  • Proven ability to analyze data and make informed risk decisions.
  • Capability to contribute effectively to both tactical and strategic planning.
  • Experience in training, coaching, and mentoring individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Commitment to confidentiality.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Willingness to travel up to 25% within the assigned territory and to the Home Office as needed.

Preferred:

  • AFSB designation.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development.
