Position Overview

The Procurement Specialist is accountable for sourcing assigned products and implementing purchasing strategies aligned with established material acquisition plans, ensuring optimal cost-effectiveness and quality standards. This role involves analyzing market trends and current supply chain dynamics, alongside internal demand, to proactively formulate supply strategies that mitigate potential risks to the organization.

Key Responsibilities (80% Core Functions)

  • Kanban Management – Establish and oversee Kanban agreements, determining appropriate stock levels to satisfy production requirements, and maintaining necessary documentation.
  • Purchasing Operations – Evaluate inventory levels against Kanban requirements and execute purchase orders accordingly, collaborating with accounts payable and receiving departments to resolve discrepancies.
  • Risk Management – Monitor potential stock-out scenarios, devise strategies to mitigate risks, control cost escalations, and uphold inventory levels in accordance with Kanban standards, ensuring effective communication with relevant departments.
  • Supply Chain Oversight – Track incoming shipments and guarantee inventory availability to meet production and customer demands, expediting materials as necessary.
  • Supplier Relations – Engage proactively with suppliers, assess their performance based on key metrics such as quality, cost, delivery, and customer service. Collaborate with high-risk suppliers to enhance performance and identify cost-saving opportunities.
  • Effective Communication – Foster teamwork with cross-functional personnel, including management, accounting, purchasing, assembly, engineering, and customer service.

Additional Responsibilities (20% Department-Specific Functions)

  • Conduct negotiations and establish contracts, maintaining necessary records.
  • Collaborate with strategic sourcing coordinators to integrate new design changes into production.
  • Provide training and support to colleagues regarding the Kanban process and its proper implementation.
  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds occasionally throughout the workday.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Requirements:
    High School Diploma and a minimum of 1 year of experience in purchasing, material control, sourcing, or supplier management within a production environment.

Skills and Abilities

  • Strong analytical capabilities with the ability to make impactful decisions.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize effectively, and adapt workflow to meet critical deadlines.
  • Self-sufficient with minimal supervision.
  • Intermediate to advanced mathematical skills.
  • Capability to interpret engineering drawings.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with a broad range of commodities.
  • Familiarity with ERP systems, preferably Epicor.
  • Understanding of MRD, Kanban/two-bin systems, and long lead-time products.
  • International procurement and logistics experience.
  • Involvement in supplier improvement initiatives.

Additional Information

  • This position operates within a collaborative office and manufacturing environment.
  • Physical requirements include the ability to lift up to 35 pounds.
  • Personal protective equipment, including steel-toed shoes and eye protection, is mandatory in manufacturing and laboratory areas.
