Job Title: Patient Safety Attendant PRN

Job Summary:

The Patient Safety Attendant (PSA) plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and well-being of high-risk patients. As a PSA, you will provide continuous observation and monitoring, collaborating with the patient care team to minimize the risk of falls and accidental or intentional self-harm. Your attention to detail and ability to remain vigilant will make a significant difference in the lives of our patients.

Responsibilities:

* Maintain constant attendance and remain within the continuous line of sight of the patient at all times
* Observe patients during meals, drinks, and assist as needed
* Ensure the cleanliness and safety of the patient's room
* Accompany patients off the unit to tests or procedures and remain with them unless instructed otherwise
* Identify and promptly report any changes or concerns in the patient's status to the assigned nurse
* Listen attentively to patients and encourage them to share concerns with the physician and/or assigned nurse
* Report patient information and activities to the next assigned PSA during hand-off with nursing present
* Communicate with other team members to ensure the patient is not left alone
* Report any expression of ideas or intention to hurt self/others or intention or desire to leave the facility Against Medical Advice (AMA)
* Avoid giving any advice
* Follow all Infection Control policies
* Complete the Environmental Safety Checklist each shift and during hand-off and have it validated by nursing

Additional Responsibilities for Patients with Suicidal Ideation:

* Remain with the patient even if family or visitors are present
* Ensure a continuous line of sight and provide constant one-on-one visual observation
* Position yourself to immediately intervene to prevent patient harm
* Ensure the environment has limited risk factors
* Account for all linen and remove it from the room immediately after use
* Ensure the patient is in a gown with no strings that may put patients at risk for strangulation
* Remove all patient clothing, shoes, jewelry, and belongings from the room
* Secure valuables that are not taken by the family
* Do not allow visitors to give any items to the patient or bring large bags into the room
* Only electric razors are allowed
* Remove any electrical cords that are not needed for patient care
* Ensure only plastic utensils are utilized for meals
* Observe closely when eating and account for all utensils immediately after a meal, removing them from the room immediately
* Ensure all plastic trash and linen bags are removed from the room
* Ensure windows are not opened
* Ensure all sharps containers are removed

Requirements:

* Ability to remain vigilant and attentive to patients at all times
* Strong communication and teamwork skills
* Ability to follow all Infection Control policies and procedures
* Ability to complete the Environmental Safety Checklist and have it validated by nursing

Work Environment:

This is an on-call PRN position that will float to all four hospitals in the Denver metro area. The position will work a variety of shifts, including day and night shifts.
