The role of a Perinatal Ultrasound Technologist is integral to our healthcare team, focusing on specialized sonography for expectant mothers. This position operates under direct supervision, ensuring the independent use of diagnostic ultrasound equipment to capture images relevant to various obstetric and gynecological conditions.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct transabdominal and transvaginal scans to provide comprehensive fetal anatomical assessments, including Doppler studies and biophysical profiles.
- Utilize appropriate transducers and settings tailored to each examination.
- Expand examination protocols based on identified abnormalities.
- Assist in invasive procedures such as amniocentesis and chorionic villi sampling.
- Review physician orders to guarantee accurate diagnostic outcomes.
- Ensure all images and documentation are accurately submitted to the electronic documentation system.
Patient Care Practices
- Prepare patients by gathering pertinent clinical information for thorough examinations.
- Communicate effectively with patients and families to alleviate concerns and foster cooperation.
- Identify and address clinical issues that may affect examination outcomes.
- Adhere to National Patient Safety Goals and HIPAA regulations.
Equipment and Environment Maintenance
- Manage ultrasound equipment, troubleshooting any malfunctions as necessary.
- Perform high-level disinfection and maintain quality control as per hospital protocols.
- Ensure a clean and safe work environment, following infection prevention standards.
- Maintain adequate supplies for examinations and procedures.
Qualifications
- Experience in Maternal Fetal Medicine sonography within an outpatient context.
- Education: Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Sonography.
- Certifications: Basic Life Support (CPR, BLS), Fetal Nuchal Translucency Certification, Sonography Certification (ARRT), and ARDMS certification.
Skills and Abilities
- Proficient in operating ultrasound equipment with physical dexterity.
- Strong understanding of fetal anatomy and physiology.
- Effective communication and analytical skills for problem-solving.
- Ability to perform in high-pressure environments while maintaining attention to detail.
