Under general supervision, you will carry out a comprehensive range of automotive and mechanical repair and maintenance tasks on various gasoline and/or diesel-powered vehicles, including cars, trucks, buses, motorcycles, and specialized construction or recreational vehicles.

Additionally, you will be responsible for repairing, maintaining, servicing, or modifying specialized equipment associated with these vehicles.

Key Responsibilities:

You will perform all automotive or mechanical repair and maintenance tasks on the types of mobile equipment utilized by the department.

Your duties will include inspecting equipment to identify defects or necessary repairs.
Planning the sequence of repair operations will be essential.
You will dismantle and remove defective components and replace them with new or rebuilt parts, as well as rebuild automotive components or assemblies.

Your role will involve repairing, adjusting, altering, and servicing a wide range of vehicles, including automobiles, trucks, motorcycles, and specialized machinery such as bulldozers, backhoes, and cranes.

Moreover, you will be tasked with repairing and maintaining all mechanically, hydraulically, electrically, or pneumatically operated auxiliary equipment mounted on or associated with these vehicles, including loading mechanisms, pumps, and compressors.

Performing major and minor repairs on heavy-duty diesel engines, automatic transmissions, and other specialized components will also be part of your responsibilities.

You will maintain air conditioning and heating units, door controls, and other operational systems within public transportation coaches.

Utilizing electric arc or acetylene welding equipment and machine shop tools to fabricate parts as needed for repairs will be required.

You will also conduct minor bodywork and replace vehicle glass, windows, and lights.
Maintaining records of work performed and materials used will be essential.
Instructing and supervising apprentices and helpers will be part of your role.

Furthermore, you will repair and service various mobile or portable equipment and tools, such as mowers, generators, and concrete mixers.

Performing repair and service tasks on stationary equipment, including compressors and generators, will also be expected.

You may operate tow trucks to assist disabled vehicles in the field and shift vehicles within department premises.

Qualifications (Required):

You should possess education equivalent to the completion of two years, preferably graduating from a four-year trade or vocational high school with courses in general shop and automotive repair.

A minimum of three (3) years of experience in repairing and rebuilding gasoline and/or diesel-powered vehicles or completion of an approved four-year apprenticeship in automotive repair or its equivalent is required.

Qualifications (Preferred):

Ideally, you will have two (2) years of experience in repairing various construction, maintenance, or specialized vehicles.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
You should have a solid understanding of the tools, methods, materials, and practices used in automotive repair.
Knowledge of general automotive repair and maintenance is essential.
Familiarity with mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic principles as they apply to automotive equipment is necessary.
Proficiency in using computers, including AssetWorks M5 software, is beneficial.
Skills in performing automotive repairs and maintenance, as well as using tools and related equipment, are required.
You must be able to follow written and oral instructions effectively.
Additionally, the ability to weld, braze, and cut with electric arc and acetylene torch is important.
Experience with electronic diagnostic equipment and the ability to read and interpret shop manuals and diagrams will be advantageous.
Finally, the ability to interact tactfully and effectively with others is crucial.

Licenses, Certifications, and Other Special Requirements:
A valid State of Michigan Driver or Chauffeur License is required.
Additional endorsements may be necessary based on departmental requirements.
